We booked interconnecting rooms at a fabulous rate of 230 euros per room per night for dinner, bed and breakfast. However once there the rooms we had been allocated were very small (we have three children who always have their own room).
At the reception desk (even though the hotel was virtually full) the staff were incredibly helpful and showed me two other 'setups' that would have been appropriate.
We decided to go for a bedroom with interconecting lounge (with sofa-bed) for a fabulous rate of 309 euros (for both bits). The rate incuded the minibar (the free chocolate went down very well with my three children) and the wine was a decent standard, in addition to this, it included breakfast at the club lounge which offered a wide enough range of breakfast choices and in the evenings from 5.30pm had free wines etc and hot and cold nibbles.
It felt a little strange going into the lounge to get our 'freebies', but once the room filled up the atmosphere was like a very chilled but lively (you get my drift) nice bar.
Our children were the only ones there, but we did not feel self conscious and the manager when she saw our children there even went downstairs to collect colouring things for the younger two.
The decor is rather peculiar and you are definately part of a 'chain', but that actually worked in the hotel's favour in so much as the staff were all very well trained, the hotel was spotless and the 'american' attitude to customer service was very, very welcome!
The restaurant (behind the bar) was fabulous and very inexpesive compared to other five stars we have visited in mainland Europe.

  • Liked — Friendliness of staff and free alcohol!
  • Disliked — Peculiar decor (if It had to find a fault)
  • Tips/Secrets: — Train to and from airport very cheap!

The hotel was generally clean and comfortable, and the staff was very professional, but the hotel itself was very generic. Once you entered the lobby, you could have been in any Howard Johnsons or Holiday Inn. There was no individulism. The location was good, being close to the train and canal stations and many tourist sites, but room service breakfast trays left in the hallways reamined there until well into the afternoon, and I was awakened very early one morning by a work crew hammering in the next room.

Overall a pretty good hotel. We had a standard room which was spacious and clean. I requested a high floor room but we checked in late and only got a 3rd floor (out of 8) which looked out onto a car park!
Air con in the room was good but it was noisy from about 6 am outside the window so I'd recommend going for a high floor on the front (city streets in Amsterdam are quiet as not much traffic)
Hotel staff were extremely helpful and pleasant and a definate plus point fir the hotel.
We paid 189Euros per night per room without breakfast . It's easy to get breakfast in the cafe's close to the hotel so not a big deal. Overal value for money was OK.
Location of the hotel was excellent, all major attracttions were within 30 mins walk - most within 15 mins and public transport was excellent and cheap.
Other negative point was room had no tea/coffee making.

After coming from London's Renaissance, I was a little shocked at the comparison. This is a very generic hotel, in a great location, and overpriced for what I received in room and services. It felt like I'd timewarped except the pricing was in futuristic figures. The hotel felt cold, emotionally and from the attitude of staffing.

A mix of bad luck and bad hotel services turned our stay at the Renaissance into a nightmare. It was a bad omen when we had to walk to the hotel from the train station as it was too close for any cab driver to take us. The front desk was staffed by an inexperienced trainee who had major difficulties finding our reservation.
The room was OK, but rather dark and the halls were dirty, lined with room service trays that had not been picked up. The worst feature was the lack of an in-room safe which is peculiar given that Amsterdam is a dangerous place in terms of theft of personal property. To that end, we had a carry bag stolen that night while we dined outdoors, and without an in-room safe, we were left to carry our passports on our person forcing us to spend half a day at the US consulate getting new passports ($200 later). We also lost a camera and diabetic supplies.
The next day, we used the safe deposit boxes at the front desk for what was left of our valuables. Later that day, when we went to retrieve some personal items, we find that the front desk clerk neglected to give us a key to the box. Instead, she left it in an envelope with our room number in an empty break room. Luckily, nothing was missing.
Even though the Marriott site says there is a fitness center at the hotel, the fitness facility actually is not part of the hotel itself and has a hefty premium charge. Not even the priciest Marriotts in New York have that fee attached for health club access.
The last oddity was our ride to the airport. The concierge arranged it with a shuttle service advertised in the lobby, but we were taken instead by a private cab. That caused us to wonder just what’s going on at that place!
