We have not been to the Renaissance, Amsterdam in a while for no other reason than we have been busy in other parts of the world, including the Isle of Wight. It had become quite a dull place so, to the returning guest, the refurbishment is quite striking especially in the lobby area. We were offered a room 'with a view'. This means a view of the other side of Kattengat rather than the courtyard. Well, what did you expect to see from an Amsterdam hotel window (madam)? The club lounge is positively enormous for reasons which I hope do not become obvious. The Scossa restaurant on Sunday morning for breakfast was unpleasantly crowded and slightly less orderly than feeding time at the zoo. It must be famine or feast there then because, in the evening when I wanted to relax there (eating), it was closed. I questioned what their marketing strategy is as I find it extraordinary that the main restaurant in an international hotel would close on any day of the week. This irritation only brought more closely into focus two unserviceabilities; one of the three elevators causing in turn the call button between two of them to be out of use and one of two coffee machines in the lounge. Overall, the room was not at all bad if rather small which is typical of Amsterdam hotels.
