This is a case of an opportunity missed.

Upon arrival my hopes were high. The hotel is in an excellent location close to the Old City plus the Jordaan etc. The reception was impressive and the rooms are large, but it's when you ask for something the hotel falls down. We had to ask 3 times to be moved to a room with a Queen/King bed from one with 2 singles.

The in room entertainment didn't work for our whole stay, (3 Nights) the healthclub is an extra charge, (not expected in a 5 Star hotel!) When we went the Swimming Pool and Sauna were both our of order and then we were charged 8 Euros each for the smallest steam room in the world by the extremely rude receptionist, you expect more from a Hotel claiming to be 5 Star!

Finally there is a large nightclub in the basement of the Hotel. We were woken on two nights by booming music and when this issue was raised it was dismissed out of hand as 'we don't own it'!

In short I would look for a hotel in the same area but which delivers on more modest claims rather than accept the very poor level of service we received during our stay.

We stayed here for a couple of days in July, just after staying in the Canal House Hotel. The Canal House has loads of charm and I loved it, but the Renaissance is in a great location too. Also, the food is excellent. Although it is a chain hotel, quite frankly, as soon as you walk out the door, there is an infinite amount of "Amsterdam Ambience." The Renaissance also has those modern things we "sometimes want" in a hotel, such as Internet access. It will be a toss up which hotel we stay in the next time we visit Amsterdam, as we were perfectly content in both.

This was a great hotel in a central location. I stayed here over Christmas and the concierge recommended an excellent restaurant for Christmas dinner. The hotel was quiet and the rooms were a decent size.
The coffee and teas and fireplace in the lobby were a nice touch.
