“Modern & luxurious hotel complex”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2011

We had a wonderful stay in this clean, friendly modern & luxurious hotel complex. We stayed for 4 nights in the end of May and had unusualy hot weather for the season and country (almost 30 C). The location was just great, about 500 m from the Central Station and in walking distance to the Dam.
The service was discrete and very efficient and friendly and the hotel is beautifully looked after. Breakfast was a delight! Thank you for a lovely stay.

This hotel is in a great Amsterdam location. It is an easy walk from the train station. The front desk staff is very nice and friendly. The room was clean and bigger than standard European hotels. I have stayed here two times and will stay here every time I am in Amsterdam.

First off, I am a Marriott Rewards member, so I enjoy some additional perks when staying in a Marriott property.

This includes access to the club lounge, which in this hotel is very clean, well stocked, and has a nice layout.

I also get free internet, another very nice perk.

The fitness facility is nice here, which is huge for me being a frequent flier. I was here on vacation, but still,,,,I eat therefore I must sweat a little on the treadmill.

The location is really the value in this hotel. Its a 5 minute walk if you are a fat turtle from the train station, and right in the middle of the shopping without actually being in the middle of the hustle, bustle, and noise.
You can really walk Amsterdam from edge to edge in 30 minutes, and this location is easy for access to East and West side museums and sight seeing.

The hotel staff here was very helpful. My girlfriend had to ship something back to the states and they found us a box, tape, and a FedEx label. The staff is like the city: warm and pleasant. (Unless you are standing in the middle of the bike path. Just a little advice,,,,make sure you pay attention to where you are walking and that you do not stand in the bike paths. I saw several people go down, and when they have just left a "coffeeshop" and not a "cafe", its highly entertaining.)

Another piece of advice for Amsterdam: Pickpockets. I think its mentioned in another review. However, I witnessed it with my own eyes here. After traveling to lots of big cities where that advice is given all the time, to actually see it happen in front of you was amazing. The guy who was robbed was wearing a long cardigan with big pockets, and his fat wallet was just hanging at the side of his body. As a chick, carry a purse with a zipper. And, leave all your fancy jewelry at home.

Room Tip: Be a Marriott Rewards member!!!

The doors on the rooms are incredible, it has a slow close mechanism that suddenly slams the door at the last minute, I tried a few times to close the door myself, waiting for the moment it rocketed forward, but just couldn't close it quietly !!! So needless to say, people just let it close on its own, and this was an absolute nightmare. No partitions along the corridor so you have a whole floors worth of people coming in at all hours slamming doors.

Apart from that...haha...Not sure about the 5 star rating, possibly on a good day ! Breakfast was very expensive too, staff were 'so so'.

We enjoyed our short stay at the Renaissance in Amsterdam. The room was clean, crisp and well taken of. The breakfast was great and was close to many great places for walking and getting around. The only down side of the hotel was you just seemed to keep walking and walking to get to your room. Other than that I look forward to our next trip to Amsterdam, what a wonderul place to visit.

Reception staff surly. Particularly Asian gentleman- Kit? Totally disinterested did not have a nice word to say. I was particularly annoyed that he disputed the fact that I was entitled to free internet in the room based on the booking made with BA. It was stated on the voucher which of course Kit chose not to look for. He was just being lazy and I could not be bothered for 6 euros - I know what I have booked and paid for
The room was clean and smart but tiny. Bathroom was small with no decent amenities

The concierge staff were a redeeming feature very nice and helpful at all times oh and the coffee machine was free and served good coffee

The concierge service was excellent. They helped with tour information....actually made the reservations and did all the leg work; we simply showed up. As well, they made dinner reservations at a nearby Italian restaurant and arrangements for an early morning Taxi to the airport.

Room Tip: We had a nice view overlooking the main entrance which is on a small narrow street.
