“good news..bad news (Marriott Platinum Member Review)”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2011

Good news
- Location is very central (quaint back street close to all the action)
- Front desk staff and concierge (Ben) are incredibly friendly and helpful
- Rooms are clean and functional
- Air-conditioning was fabulous (although I understand it really varies by room)
- Gym has everything you need without feeling cramped
- Club lounge offers a solid selection of drinks and snacks throughout the day
- easy to catch a cab at any time of day or night

Bad news
- They put me on a low level in a regular room above a noisy walkway
- Room had no water, robe or other Platinum touches. It didn't even have an alarm clock
- Staff were overworked in the busy Club lounge- they were actually quite hostile to the guests

Summary: an okay stay but would have expected to have been assigned an upgraded room

Sometimes "corporate" hotels just work well when you're traveling. The Renaissance Amsterdam was just what we needed. We arrived a day late thanks to mechanical problems with our flight and, because it's a Marriott property we were able to adjust our reservation with ease.

True, this is a haven for tourists preparing for river cruises, and its conference center will appeal mightily to individuals arranging meetings in Amsterdam. This hotel has an excellent location, only a few blocks from Amsterdam Centraal railroad station and within walking distance of sites of interest. The hotel is clean and well kept, and staff provide a high level of service, especially for somewhat weary travelers. We also had a package that included a free buffet breakfast, museum tickets (which allowed us to beat the long lines at the Van Gogh), and 15% off on dinners in Scossa, the hotel's restaurant.

You can do worse, a lot worse in Amsterdam. This is assured to be a decent place to hang your hat, surpassed by luxury hotels and boutiques strongly recommended by friends (and perhaps not travel guidebooks).

Room Tip: Street side rooms face noisy bars

The hotel is located right in central Amsterdam, 5 minutes from Centraal Station, in an area with lots of pedestrian streets, bars, coffee shops, and restaurants and lots of tourist and local foot and bike traffic, and a block from a canal. The hotel consists of several old buildings put together so the rooms vary and the hallways are a bit of a maze. The room we had was large and well appointed, and very clean, and I suspect the hotel was modernized not too long ago. Service was excellent and breakfast was very good. We were there for 2 days before leaving on a cruise as were a lot of other people and check out was very crowded and somewhat chaotic. The doorman was very helpful getting people into cabs and combining groups into cabs and keeping all of the luggage straight, but the cabbies were overcharging. (Not the hotel's fault.) I would come back. Being right in the center of Amsterdam is exciting.

Perfect place to stay in, I liked the breakfast - so generous, I loved the location - just 5 min walking to any popular places. My first time in Amsterdam was splendid and the hotel played guiding role.

Room Tip: My pleasure to recommend

Nice hotel, but out to get you. To use the phone, even an 800 number, you pay handsomely, so beware. I had pre-booked and pre-paid this stay, but was billed twice on my credit card. In trying to get the hotel to credit me, I had to call 3 times.

The hotel is so integrated to the surrounding area that you risk missing it if not the flags in front of the property - applauds to the developer and Marriott for making a wise choice!
The hotel is quite large but is very quiet with modern and clean rooms and general area.
Close to central railway station, major attractions and public transport stops if you need.
A great choice, will stay again when back to the charming city of Amsterdam!

Spent four nights pre-cruise. Room was available early in the morning after an overnight flight from Atlanta which was much appreciated. Concierge and bell staff were excellent, particularly Ben (handlebar mustache) and his team. Recommendations were spot on for places to go, tours to take and places to eat. The hotel was clean throughout, bedroom and bath spotless. Front desk staff was professional and quick to resolve a minor billing issue. Requested and was granted a late check-out (one hour) since we were going to the Anne Frank House and we wanted a place to store our luggage and make a pit stop before taking a taxi to the Amsterdam Cruise Terminal which is about a 5-7 minute ride. The hotel is near the Centaal Station, but is on a side street. This is a real positive after watching others having to fight through the sidewalk crowd to get to their hotel.
