My wife and I stayed again at the Marriott from March 29 until April 4. Once again, the staff was pleasant, efficient, and even friendly without being in the way. This time we stayed in a room with a view north over Leidseplein to City Center. The noise was definitely more than when we stayed in February, but since we were on the 10th floor, it didn't keep us awake. The noise from the bathroom fan was less in this room.
The location of this hotel is excellent, but my personal opinion is that Leidseplein is a bit seedy. I prefer the Jordaan, but it is a short (lovely in the Spring) walk along the Prinzengracht from the Marriott, and I think the value proposition is better at the Marriott than at the Pulitzer. It is also steps away from the tram stop that will get you anywhere in metro Amsterdam, except Schipol. The parking lot is small, but we only used it for one night. I wish we had used it for two because a nearby lot charged us 58 Euros for 11 hours!!!!
This time we ducked into the restaurant ("Quoy") right before they were closing and they didn't make us feel as if we were keeping them from leaving. The entrees were very good, as was the wine (bought on the waiter's recommendation), and since we were the only patrons, other members of the wait staff stopped by to chat. We had returned from a days drive to Friesland and the conversation - in English - took on the tone of talking to neighbors about your day. This is very typical of the interactions with the staff of the hotel. When I stayed in a Marriott in Paris, the staff made you feel as if you were taking all the energy they had. The prices and food at Quoy are on par with other restaurants we visited, such as DeLeutwe, De Rieger, Lucidous, and Sluizer.
The best reason to stay here is the consistency of the experience. You can trust that the room will be clean and comfortable. The executive lounge deploys very good breakfasts, snacks, and hors d'oerves and the bar provides a comfortable place to unwind after a day sightseeing. The check in and check out experience are efficient and when I had a question about the bill, the young lady that answered remembered me from February. That counts in my book! My only complaint about both stays has nothing to do with the hotel itself. Its just that I like to be a part of the place I'm visiting, and coming back to a hotel full of Americans is...well....disappointing. It reminds me I have to go back to my routine.
