There are two parts to this review: the hotel/room “in isolation” as itself and then how it fitted in with the weather and locality. So, the hotel itself: yes, good service, decent room, large, comfortable bed (not bad pillows!), relaxing chair to sit in and good if small bathroom with (a pretty good) mixer shower, although the bathroom did lack a heated towel rack. And good location near museums, restaurants and trams. You can walk (quickly) in to Dam square in around half an hour. Characters bar and grill was good – nice food for what it offered, warm and good for people-watching outside! The one disappointing thing was the lobby which (unlike other Marriots I have been in) was small and you couldn’t relax in it with a coffee if you wanted to.
However, we went between Christmas and New Year and this is why the hotel let itself down badly: firstly, the room was almost constantly only-just-warm-enough, and sometimes cold. Yes, Amsterdam was going through a cold patch (as in just below zero at night) but I would expect a five star hotel to be planned to manage that and cope with it. Instead, the built-in room heating, even when constantly set to 28 degrees, blew out just-about-warm air (although not until after several hours after we initially arrived) and on its own would not have made the room warm enough. When we mentioned this to the Marriot, I was told “the hotel is running out of heaters…”, so clearly it was not just our room. That said, they did bring us an electric heater within 5 minutes and it did help.
Another reason I think the room was cold was because it had a nice big window but without double-glazing. Therefore, not only did that mean a lack of warmth but it also provided very poor sound-proofing. We were on the seventh floor but at night we could hear every shout and car door slam in the street below. Yes, the hotel is on a main road but our room faced a side street and at night it was quite noisy on several nights.
I do realise that one could argue that we should expect a degree of cold at this time of year, and a degree of noise as it is party season, and that’s fine if you want to accept that. But one of the reasons we booked a five star hotel was to get a better hotel which should negate those issues. We have stayed in other Marriots before in other cities and at this time of year and they have been fine, but unfortunately this did put us off the chain if we were considering doing another trip next year at this time.
Finally, for food, we recommend Het Molenpad at Prinsengracht 653. Excellent food (full meals and snack menu) and great atmosphere.
