“Eight star ?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2014

I have been a Marriott client for over 50 years; this was my first encounter with a 8 star Marriott and I have stayed at the Ritz, JW's, Renaissance and even watched
the 1st Marriott out of Washington area being built in Saddle Brook, N.J. which was approx. 1963 and I lived in that town at that time. I also am a Marriott stock holder
and own 2 time shares in Maui with Marriott.
A 8 star Marriott? I made my reservations approximately 6 months prior to my arrival in Amsterdam; when checking in I asked for concierge level and was advised that there were none available and ended up on the 3rd floor; room 325 which had a decent view. However; we just arrived from a river cruise and the room size made me feel like I was still there. Marriott prides itself on their bedding; my 1st night sleeping was like attempting to sleep on a ocean cruiser wherein they took two twin mattresses and put them together and called it a queen bed.,, and there was a bump in the middle! Upon my phoning housekeeping I found out that was exactly what I encountered; two twin mattresses put together and called a king!
My gold elite profile has been in the Marriott files for many years but evidently no one in Amsterdam bothered to read it. Every Marriott I have stayed in for several years including Courtyards, Residence Inns, JW's, Ritz, etc all offered easy access to the internet...but this 8 star Marriott takes exception to that!
The New York steak house was excellent; however, this is not a 8 star hotel!

The hotel is a standard Marriott with good rooms but there meeting room areas has been updated nicely. The new concept is collaboration and interesting work spaces - it allows meeting goers the ability to break away, brainstorm, get a bite to eat or coffee, and then join back into the group. The larger meeting rooms were also good for traditional "powerpoint" meetings. The front desk staff and concierge floor staff were very helpful.

Room Tip: I would say a canal facing room is the best.

Our goal was to visit museums and they were a short walk from the hotel. All you can expect from a Marriott, clean, efficient, good sized room, very comfy bed, even a decent bar/restaurant if you're pressed for time. Concierges were excellent.

If you are looking for a comfortable hotel in a good location without paying $600 -$700 per night then this is for you. The hotel is older but has been refurbished and the rooms are comfortable. It is not a classic like the Pulitzer or the Intercontinental in Amsterdam, but it is also does not cost the same. You are within walking distance of Dam Square, Anne Frank house, Red Light District, Rijks Museum, etc....It is about a $40 Euro drive from Schipol. For 80 Euro, you can upgrade to the Executive Club which essentially gives you free wifi, free breakfast and afternoon cocktails and hors d'oeuvres along with complimentary non-alcoholic beverages and snack all day long. It was worthwhile and was very popular. We stored one of our bags at the hotel for 2 weeks while we headed off to Africa and they were just fine with this. Great service and if you can book off of Priceline or another discounter - you can get some decent rates.

Amsterdam is in itself a warm and friendly place to visit. Staying at the Marriott Amsterdam was just icing on the cake! The service was perfect. The rooms were clean and nicely sized. The woman in the gift shop down near the lobby offered lots of friendly information about the area and the souviners in her shop were nicely priced. The food in the Midtown restaurant was amazing as was the service. Wouid definitely stay there again!

Room Tip: I would think that the rooms above the entrance would be noisy just like every other hotel.

We stayed here prior to our cruise of the Baltic-it was very "American" with free wi-fi and nice executive lounge. Rooms were ready by noon which allowed us to freshen up after a long flight. Within walking distance to museums, boat tour and Hard Rock. Nice bar and restaurant on site. Would highly recommend!
