I took two of my pre-teen boys to Amersterdam for a long weekend. None of us had ever been, nor do we speak Dutch. The trip was very easy with a direct flight to Atlanta. The airport isn't far from downtown and the shuttle, train and taxis were easy to locate. I had booked a stay at the Marriott in the museum district. I was not too excited, since I didn't get a sense it had much charm from the website. We were pleasantly surprised. We had a room on arrival (right when you need a nap), which was EXTREMELY clean, very roomy for European standards, big bathroom, too. We were on the executive floor, which provided GREAT ammenities. Loved the breakfast and cocktail hour in the comfortable lounge on the 9th floor, which overlooked the city. Staff was very nice and accomodating, too. Not super quaint, but did turn out to be super good! We would stay there again and have recommended to my husband, who travels a lot on business.
