“Luxurious Hotel with a Very Good Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2012

We (2 parents and young adult son) recently stayed here for 5 nights. The hotel itself is really top-notch and everything you expect from a modern upscale Marriott. The rooms are nice and spacious; there are a few lounges in the lobby; a little courtyard to sit in on nice days; and a general feeling of high class and comfort. The staff is truly friendly and helpful and committed to serving you in any way that they can. Because this is Amsterdam, nearly all the staff also speak very good English.

The Marriott also has a very good location. It is located just a few blocks from the Leidseplein, a major eating, shopping, and late-night area. The Leidseplein is packed with restaurants-some of them touristy, some of them less so-and is one of the main entertainment districts outside of the area near Dam Square/Centraal Station/the Red Light District. I personally found the Leidseplein a bit too touristy but extremely convenient with so many places to eat. Also the Leidseplein is a major tram stop so you can go from there to most other places of importance in Amsterdam. In terms of sight-seeing, the Marriott is also just a 10-min. walk from the Museumplein, where you will find 3 of the major art museums in the city-the Van Gogh Museum; the Rijksmuseum; and the Stedelijk Museum. In sum, if you can afford it, the Marriott offers a great combo of feeling pampered with a convenient location.

Hotel is in a wonderful location within walking distance of museums and good restaurants. There's a lovely pancake restaurant in the square right across the street.

Rooms are large and service is very good.

The big surprise was the excellent Indonesian food in the bar, which is not to be missed since a table in front of a window also provides great people and bicycle watching.

This hotel makes a very good base for exploring Amsterdam attractions, with decent rooms, good location with access to trams and a great executive lounge.

Upsides: location is close to attractions and trams and near Vondelpark (great for running/relaxing), safe/clean neighborhood for families, executive lounge is good deal, closer to Schiphol than some, will sleep 3.

Downsides: it's expensive, exterior and hallways are tired/dated, desk is always crowded, front door staff are unhelpful and have an attitude, far from train station, slow elevators.

Room Tip: The Executive Lounge package provides a great breakfast, free happy hour cocktails and even a light...

When you first see the building, you first thought is UH-OH because the building looks old. But the lobby has been recently refurbished and the rooms as well. I later learned that this is the first Marriott outside of the US.
One thing good about old hotels is the rooms are large. The beds are huge double beds and very comfortable. We stayed here for a week and were very pleased with everything. We had access to the lounge and the spread was great. It was also a fantastic place to chill after all the biking and touring.
The location is TOPS. When you're travelling with kids, it's so easy to return to the hotel to dump shopping stuff or return to pick a up a jacket, etc since it's so central. Won't stay anywhere else in beautiful Amsterdam.

The Marriott in Amsterdam is in a great location, just a few blocks from major museums and within reasonable walking distance of many sights. And, it is on a plethora of bus and tram lines and so getting around Amsterdam is very easy. The hotel itself is nicely laid out with lot of sitting area, a decent business center (though it charges for printing), and pleasant people. I stayed on the executive floor and this included access to the executive lounge with a fine breakfast and drinks and light food at 5:30, followed by deserts a bit later. All this, as well as internet, was included in the price. I originally booked a regular room and then realized that the difference in price for executive was more than made up for by the breakfast, internet, etc.

The one issue I have is that if I did not have the executive floor internet is ridiculously expensive (almost 20 euros for 24 hours), although that includes access for three devices and it was pretty high speed.

My room was very comfortable with a good desk, really great lighting, good temperature control, a nice bathroom, etc.

We stayed 5 nights in two executive club rooms on points (so you can imagine we are very experienced travelers). Basically they gave us regular rooms with robes and club access. The rooms are standard Marriott albeit vey worn. Our room looked onto a wall. Our sons had a great view of the front of the hotel. Somehow that does not seem right ; ). No fuss made about this at all--we are out to have a stress free pleasant vacation.

The Club is very nice and the food is very good. The concierges were very pleasant and helpful. However when we asked for a city wide type pass that gave us access to sights without lines they sold us the Holland Pass. I liked the concept which was based on purchasing a specific set of sights to see (three tiers) rather than the usual passes which run for 24h, 48h, etc. For 5 days this made sense to us and we already knew what we wanted to visit. However this pass DID NOT get us fast tracked. In fact we had to stand on the regular ticket buyers line to exchange our pass for tickets. After this happened at the Van Gogh museum I spoke to the concierge who called the Holland Pass office where we were reassured that this must have been a "mistake make by some stupid temporary holiday worker". However in the next place we went the exact same thing happened. Furthermore, we were told that our son under 12 did not need a pass yet at the Heineken exhibit (where we had to also get tickets on the regular ticket line, although this line was not as long) they insisted he needed a ticket, but let him go through without one as a courtesy when we balked at paying.

The location is also very central and convenient although I have decided it would be better on our next trip to not be in such a busy touristy part of the city so we would be forced to explore the "off the beaten path". That is what we would do the new time--without the Holland Pass!!

Dear Guest,
On behalf of our General Manager, Mr. Rex Nijhof, we would like to thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We have shared your feedback with the company that is responsible for the Holland Pass because it is designed as an all-in-one city pass which offers the best value and convenience when visiting the highlights of your choice. In the area surrounding the Marriott Hotel, we have the beautiful Vondel Park, nearby quiet neighborhoods and local restaurants, and we hope on your next trip to Amsterdam, that we can share some of these hidden treasures with you.

Kind regards,
Meredith Opten

Marriott hotel is location is great, opposite Leidsplein square and close to the museums and canal rides. We stayed in a executive level corner room which was slightly larger than normal rooms. The room size was great, but the bathroom was very small. Executive level lounge is located in the lobby and offers free breakfast and evening cocktails and appetizers. Food was good but it was a bit crowded. Check in was horrible and took nearly 15 minutes. The only other negative was that the elevators were slow and it we had to wait for them just about every time but would go back inspite of this. Room rates seemed very high but we stayed on points.

Room Tip: book a executive level corner room
