“Perfect location - lovely hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2010

My son and I have just spent a week at the Crown Plaza, Amsterdam and we were absolutely delighted with the hotel.

Our holiday was a last minute booking . We booked the flights and then the hotel. The hotel was recommended to us and it did not disappoint.

Our first encounter with the staff was very welcoming and friendly. The reception area was very neutrally decorated and the air conditioned quiet was a relief after a long hot journey from the UK. As we arrived late morning and the room was not ready until mid afternoon we stowed our luggage at the hotel and set off exploring straight away.

Amsterdam is a very walkable city and the Crowne Plaza is excellently situated

When we eventually got to our room it could not have been better. It was a spacious twin-bedded room with two double beds. The room had air conditioning, a large widescreen TV with a good selection of channels including BBC1, BBC2 and CNN , coffee making facilities and a minibar. There was an ice machine on our floor and we bought beer and drink from a local supermarket .

The bathroom was very clean with grey stone tiling and a very efficient hairdryer. There were a few toiletries placed daily and there were two bathrobes laid out on the bed when we arrived. The bathrobes were great but we made the mistake of not hanging the towels out one day and new bathrobes did not appear !

The room was well insulated for noise - our room overlooked the street which was a major tram route. We even spent time watching as the rails were being worked on whilst the trams were still running !

Each day the coffee, milk and complimentary biscuits and mint chocolates were replaced as was a complimentary bottle of water.

We were on room only so had to go out for breakfast. The restaurant seemed very expensive so we never ate there. There were plenty of places to get pastries and coffee and there was a McDonalds round the corner. We tried the Chinese restaurant across the road which was absolutely fine but rather costly.

The location was the main joy - everything radiates from the Central Station and we were less than 5 minutes away. We were able to purchase canal rides at the hotel which saved queuing. We did a lot of walking and took day trips to the coast from the station.
Anything to do with travelling seems relatively cheap and everything runs smoothly.

The hotel was brilliantly placed for all our excursions and was a welcome and peaceful haven from the hubub and heat of the city. Our stay was during the main build up to the World Cup Final and everywhere was a sea of orange and happy expectation.
I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and it will certainly be my first choice on a return visit.

First of all please it's ridiculous to have to defend a hotel but are most of my fellow travelers used to old, disgusting, dirty, 18-19th century furnishing just because they don't want to be in a modern "sterile" setting? Ridiculous! People please don't believe any of the other reviews hating on this hotel.

THE GOOD:

1. Clean. I mean the entire hotel. Yes it was modern, sterile, no funky "Amsterdam" or old architecture but no dust, mildew, bugs or other garbage associated with "funky" hotels.
2. Large rooms
3. Plasma TV
4. Plenty of storage space
5. In-room safe easy to operate
6. Plenty of outlets
7. Hairdryer
8. Coffee/tea/biscuits/chocolate/shampoo/soap with additional upon request
9. Prompt housekeeping calls
10. Staff that respects Do Not Disturb sign
11. Ice machine
12. Large bathroom with removable massage showerhead
13. Seemingly comfortable queen bed with feathered down style bedding
14. A free bottle of sparkling water
15. Business centre with internet computers and printers (free)
16. Excellent location
17. Free umbrellas for use (during a rainstorm ugh)
18. Allowed late check out
19. Luggage room for storage prior to departure
20. Fitness room (did not use)

THE BAD:

1. Only 1 bottle of sparkling water
2. Internet prohibitively expensive, only 2 business centre computers and one was offline most of the time along with a busted printer
3. Broken umbrellas
4. Plane departed 17:20 checkout only allowed up to 12:30
5. Few other perks or amenities such as a jacuzzi

Much nice than the near-by Inntel (formerly Golden Tulip). I stayed at the Inntel not long ago and I will insist that the Crown Plaza is a cleaner, nicer version of the Inntel.

Cannot fathom why this hotel is rated #70 when it should easily be #20. Is it the lack of cheap Internet? Use the business centre. If you want to sit in the hotel room and use cheap internet go somewhere else. If you want a free mini-bar go to Grand Amrath. Looking for luxury go to the Intercontinental. Want a funky old bed and breakfast then go to one of the locations rated 1-10. Need a cheap place then stay outside of the centre or in a hostel.

This is your typical modern newly refurnished and redecorated US-style Holiday Inn but a Crown Plaza with a little extra such as a nice living room with television and bar/food service for example...but the hotel is not cheap as most things in Amsterdam are not cheap. In the US though you would be paying half the price for a night but I am pretty sure it is because of the expensive nature of Amsterdam city centre.

Just spent a night at the Crown Plaza, Amsterdam and were very impressed indeed.

Our welcome was excellent with friendly and very helpful, happy staff. They even offered to take our luggage, which is a nice difference to many other hotels in the area. The foyer is large and clean with an odd bar area that is part of the adjacent restaurant. The hotel really could do with a separate bar area.

Our room was clean and well appointed. I did think it was a little small though. The bathroom was also small but clean and with a few toiletries. It could do with a few more complimentary soaps and shampoos etc. The bed was large and comfy with plenty of clean blankets. The TV was a good size and had loads of channels to choose from. The complimentary bottle of water was a nice touch, particularly considering the temperature outside.

We didn't try the Dutch restaurant as the food didn't seem very attractive and the price was well over the top. There was however an excellent Chinese restaurant across the road, albeit a little expensive too.

The hotel lacks a pool however there is a good sized gym and a sauna.

In terms of location, the hotel is a few minute walk from Central Station and in an area between the main road and the neighbouring shopping district. It was a little noisy with passing trams and cars etc, but don't let this put you off. Everywhere was a short walk, and in terms of location, we really couldn't fault it.

I have stayed in several Amsterdam hotels and I would say this is the best so far. The Moevenpick is on a par however it is located a little too far out of town for my liking. For a decent four star hotel, you really can't go wrong here.

We stayed one night each on either ends of our trip elsewhere. Each time the staff was efficient and friendly and after arriving form overseas flight it was nice to be able to check in early too. And, upon return, we couldn't check in early but we could drop our luggage while we went out an saw the sights. That is VERY nice. Also, they gave us free water in the room and we could purchase public transport tickets from the concierge.

There was wi-fi available for ~7 Euro/ 1 hour. Steep but they know you need it so they can charge it. I am used to free wi-fi in the US at hotels so it is hard for me to pay for it in Europe. However, we did find some restaurants over there that had free wi-fi so keep checking at each place you eat/drink.

The rooms were very nice as were the bathrooms. And, I was worried about noise, but the rooms were very quiet.

We stayed here because we could use my husband's points and they treated us just as well as, if not better than, paying customers - they were really nice. However, because I am a smoker, if we would have had to pay for the room, we would have gone to smoke-friendly hotel with one or two rooms set aside for smokers. As it was, I had to go downstairs out the front door where all the traffic, pedestrians and trains were to smoke. Lots of people looking at me in my pajamas, but, that's the sacrifice I made for free room. It was mostly worth it.

We never tried the restaurant - out and about too early and late - but it is near all public transport, plus nice walk to Dam square, train station, good bars/restaurants - great location!

Overall, if you don't smoke, this is a great hotel. If you smoke and cannot find a smoke-friendly hotel, this would be my first choice.

I stayed for two nights in June. I liked the hotel overall but the internet costs 20 euros/24 hours which is very expensive. Some front desk staff were very efficient and helpful ... others were not. You don't start helping a guest, then tell them to hold on while you deal with some paperwork and have a conversation about some other guest's mini-bar. I room was nice but the bathroom was chopped in half by the front wall of the hotel Avoid rooms 120/220/320 etc. because of this.

I spent some days at crown plaza 2 weeks ago and it served us good when we explorde the city or went to the beach. The hotel is mored geared towards business traveler but the location is veryclose to the city center and the main station so it served us perfectly. The room was nice and quiet, but I think I received an upgrad from the standard room I booked due to my status. We had a medical emergency and when we asked for a pharmay, the HSE-manager was called and he helped us find a doctor specialized on expats and tourists. It was very professional. On the other side I would consider the hotel to be very personnal, but it's nicely and modern decorated. I would definitly recommend the hotel if you are looking for a sure choice where to stay in central Amsterdam. Be aware as the red light district and the coffee shops are spread out all over the center.
