Stayed at the American for 2 nights for a break with my husband without the kids. THe location is fantastic and the staff were really friendly and helpful. We thought the room was expensive (310 euro per night room only) and absolutely reaked of smoke (they won't let you have a no smoking junior suite???). We booked the split level junior suite as a luxury because of the pics on the web site and what we got was a tired faux art deco room with a bed deck. A bit dissappointing altogether.

Just returned from a weeks stay in the American Hotel.
Caught the 370 bus, outside the main entrance at the airport , to Liedseplien [ good option 3.20 euros and dropped off 25 yards from hotel ]
Was impressed with the art decco facade of the hotel, entered to find a very modern reception area
Staff were friendly and helpful and we were checked in immediately.
Our room was okay more 3 * than 5 * [ a little disappointing after what we had already seen of the hotel ]
with a balcony overlooking the canal, this side of the hotel was exceptionally quiet thru the night.
[ a tip here we were in room 409 and believe the 6 rooms with balcony's on this side are rooms 412 -407 so you may want to request one of these ]
the room had a king size bed, nice flat screen tv [ bbc1&2 ] , mini bar, 2 telephones, desk area and chair. Bathroom was fine if a little on the small side
Housekeeping was fairly good although they did forget to supply us with towels one day, quick call to reception fixed the problem.
The bar and restaurant were good, although it would have been nice if they were open later than 1 am.
On the whole i would say we enjoyed our stay and if you can get the 14 day advance booking for a room it is good value.

This hotel is in a great location and while my room was quite small it was very nice. Breakfast was a little expensive (20 Euros) but there was an excellent range of hot and cold food.

Service throughout the hotel was friendly and helpful.

My only concern was when leaving I was just about to get into a taxi of my choice when the concierge rushed out of the hotel and strongly encouraged me to get into a different taxi (one he clearly knew personally). I noticed this driver covered up the meter with his mobile phone and charged me a rip off rate to the airport (I was too tired to argue!)

Maybe it was a pure coincidence, but I suspect not. Take care when taking taxi's from this location - there's actually a taxi rank just across the street from the hotel if you want to be sure.

It was a disappointing end to an otherwise good experience.

I stayed her for 2 nights. The location is great but that was the only positive. This hotel was very expensive and was not 5 star. It was not worth the price at all. The staff at the front desk was very rude and charged us extra because we had 3 people in a room instead of 2. The room was very tiny, nothing like advertised, and we had a view of the alley. I stayed at the Marriott also, just across the canal and had a MUCH larger room for only myself and it was much less expensive. the staff was nicer there also.

Stayed in American Hotel for 2 nights in June. Great location as beside Ledeisplein Square, which has numerous bars and restaurants. Quiet, comfy and clean room with King size bed and plasma TV. Would recommend getting a Tram from Central Station to Hotel as it is a considerable distance to walk and stop is ony 2 mins walk from Hotel.
The Heineken Museum, Van Gogh Museum and Red Light District are must sees - if you want to go to the Anne Frank Museum, go early as queue was approx. 200 people long when we arrived at 11am.
We would recommend The Van Gogh Cafe and Wok to Walk as cheap, tasty places to eat.
