“Great Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2014

We had a great trip to Amsterdam made perfect by our stay at the Amsterdam American Hotel. The property is located in the old part of the city near museums and good restaurants. There is a street car stop in front of the hotel and other public transit is a short walk from the hotel. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The rooms are small and the bath tiny but functional. The hotel was clean and the property is well maintained. The breakfast buffet in the dining room is the perfect way to start your day. The outside bar and café is a perfect place to enjoy the evening sunset with a glass of wine or beer. This is a historic property constructed in the early years of the 20th century. The architectural details are worth noting, particularly the impressive four story stained glass window in the stairway. I would stay at this property again.

Room Tip: The rooms easily accommodate two people. The bath will only accommodate one person at a time.

On June 7 we drove from Bruges to Amsterdam for a three day stay in Hotel American Hotel- Hampshire Eden.
Before the review of the hotel I would like to write a little about my impression of the Amsterdam.
It was a Saturday when we arrived in Amsterdam. This was our first time in this city and we were looking forward to a new experience.
But soon we discovered Amsterdam like many other big cities has it's own problems and shortcomings.
Although there are nice, quiet and clean residential areas, nice buildings with distinctive Dutch architecture along the many canals but the central Amsterdam was extremely crowded, noisy , streets were not clean and cacophony of the combination of the crowd, the bikes, motorcycles, cars and trams was really overwhelming.
One of the highlights of our stay was the visit to Van Gogh museum which houses more than 200 original works of the painter.
We also took two tours organized by Viatour. The first was Amsterdam city sightseeing tour which was a combination of 3 hours of bus and one our of canal cruise. Although it was a good way to see the different parts of the city but the 3 hour of the bus tour was a little bit too long.
The second was Canal cruise with dinner. This was more enjoyable and the food which was prepared on board was good Wine and beer was also included in the price of the tour.
I am sure there are many small towns and villages in Holland that one can visit and enjoy but to me one visit to Amsterdam is enough.
Based on on-line information including TripAdvisor I reserved Hotel American Hotel- Hampshire Eden.
According to those information this was supposed to be recently renovated hotel. However by my observation if any renovation was done it must have been a very superficial one. To me this was an old and tiered hotel. The room which I had reserved was ``deluxe room with canal view``which supposedly was the best side of the hotel. The room size was O.K. but the furniture, the decoration and everything else was dated. There was a lot of outside noise from the boats, the cars, constant sirens of ambulance and fire trucks, the talking and shouting of people in front of the hotel ( continued non stop until early Sunday morning hours) which kept me awake all night. The next day we requested a change of room but was informed all rooms were booked and the fact that the canal side was the ``quieter`` side of the hotel.
This for the cost of 263 Euro (about 398 Canadian dollars). The breakfast was not even included and was about 20 Euro per person if one decided to have breakfast in the dark and depressing dining room of the hotel.
If you are planing to visit Amsterdam do yourselves a favor and find another hotel.

Room Tip: My personal advise is find another hotel.

Dear Guest, thank you for your visit and review posting. Although we regret that Amsterdam did not meet your expectations, we can not relate to these comments since they are a personal point of view of the city Amsterdam. We are sorry for the miscommunications with regards to a recent renovation. However we are pleased to inform that the room decor that you have described in your review is up for renovation during this year, and we regret that the outside noise had a negative effect on your comfort. Unfortunately we are not your type of hotel, but we can assure you that your comments have been taken seriously and discussed with the team. With best regards,

We arrived on the 11th July . Booked in a a room with balcony on a quite floor. We got what we asked for. The bed was big so was the room, pillows were rubbish small and very soft. Bathroom was basic and had basic things like , shower jell, soap & moisturiser. Luckily I carried my own shower cap. Tea and no milk. Water €4.50 for a 200ml bottle??? , No bicies? Drab and dreary room, very depressing decor. On the advise or someone else we decided to try this hotel as it had in the past a very good reputation. As many years have passed the hotel has failed to keep up with modern times. It is tired and boring. It hangs on to a nostalgic past in the bar area only. The restaurant looks fantastic as it was from past times. However! The staff are robotic, care very little for the needs and requirements of todays 4-5 star travellers ( 100% self-service?? what is that about). It appears on the surface that it has gone backwards in time with attitude. Excluding the reception staff who were most helpful and very kind. There was 1 barman who knew remotely what and how to treat visiting customer. I asked for a Cuba Libra and the older barman was extremely kurt and miffed I had even asked for a drink. He came with a small glass of Bacardi with Ice and a bottle of coke cola. I asked him what happened to my Cuba Libra he said I quote "this is it you can pore your own coke in it can't you". No, I said it is not what I asked for it is supposed to have lime in it. Ok he said I will get lime. So he did !A SLICE!! Following that he then proceeded to drop a couple of empty glasses behind he and almost cut my legs to bits. My other half attempted to get a chair and was accosted by one of the other waiting staff and told off for trying to get a seat? The evening of the 12th Another attempt to get a seat in the bar was met by a local lady almost wanting to beat me up for sitting in her seat while she had gone for a cigaret out side. The barman said it was her seat and on football nights it was always busy . I am not sure that I have come across this attitude on my travels in the past but I will not be going there back to this hotel to repeat it. The worst hotel I have been in for many years and it was expensive.

Room Tip: Book some were else. Check out the decor on a trip there but stay at your own advise I will not be g...

I am SO SO pleased we were able to find this hotel & stay here, for 2 nights in December 2013. We were newly married and decided to get away for a festive xmas break.
The hotel really made the trip that much more perfect - we pre ordered a Prosecco which was ready in ice bucket for us, room was very spacious, heating/air con, clean bathrooms, view from street side rooms is amazing, you can really see the nightlife unfold, especially at xmas! Slept peacefully, maybe because we were so tired from the adventures. Close by to popular cafes and restaurants and clubs, and shops - everything basically! Breakfast at hotel is just superb - one of the best breakfasts ever had on European trip.

Some places we checked out: Heineken experience at the factory, walked along the main canals, Reynders cafe around the corner was excellent, Grasshopper bare/cafe/steakhouse, walked around Red light district, ate at amazing independent restauarants (Pizza Pino is so cute!!), went to Jimmy Woo club, Sugar factory, xmas markets were in full swing near the hotel. Hope this helps!!

I would definitiely recommend this hotel - and we will surely stay again if we have the opportunity to visit. Any questions, feel free to ask!

Wow. There is simply no better place to be in Amsterdam. The hotel is perfectly situated in Leidseplein. The night life, museums, shops... all within a few steps of the hotel.
Our room was clean and comfortable. The bed was excellent. We had requested a quiet room and were given a room that faced the back of the building. Perfectly quiet.
One are that could have been better was the shower water pressure. It was somewhat inadequate.
Lastly, I am grateful to the front desk personnel for their assistance in attempting to get through to the airline that lost our luggage. They worked hard with me to help in a difficult situation.
Overall, a pleasant stay

We found and booked this hotel right here on Trip Advisor. We liked the reviews, the location, the photos posted, and best of all, the great price. They were running a deal that made this upscale hotel very affordable. What makes a hotel good?

Location: it is situated on the Leidseplain, near the museums and tons of lovely restaurants and open squares where people gather to talk and drink in outdoor tables under large umbrellas into the late evening. (There is a Starbucks close by if you need a coffee fix. Be aware that they do not take either a loaded Starbucks card or the phone app!) It is more of a suburban feeling here than in the hectic, crowded, noisy city center by Central Station. The Anne Frank House was a twenty minute stroll away.

The hotel lobby was bright and elegant, very understated and charming. They have more than one elevator with room enough to spare for two of you and your luggage. They have a pricy restaurant that is listed as a must visit in guide books, including Rick Steve's, but we did not try it.

The Room: very clean, with nice amenities including an electric coffee pot and coffees and teas. The bed had the most comfortable mattress, and the sheets and pillows and comforter were wonderful too. I had requested a room overlooking the canal for more peace and quiet and they honored my request. We needed more pillows, and they brought them immediately. The bathroom had an old hair dryer, but a good wall mounted magnifying glass. The room had poor lighting, but this may be typical of old European hotels. If you do not get one automatically, ask for a rubber at for the tub...it is very slick and the tub wall was high. They brought one for us when asked. No problem.

The Staff: so lovely! They called cabs for us, made restaurant reservations, suggested places to go and lent us a converter for our American electric chargers. They offered to lend us travel and guide books about Amsterdam, and gave us discount coupons. We arrived two hours before our room was ready and they took and secured our luggage so we could get a head start seeing the city. When we returned, our luggage was delivered to our room.

Right behind the hotel is a canal company that has a Hop On Hop Off boat or you can buy a 1 1/2 hour round trip canal tour. That's what we did and it was great as an overview and very scenic. Highly recommend it!

We just loved staying here. The trams are right nearby to take you everywhere. The staff was terrific. The bed was fabulous and the room was quiet. What more could you ask? Thank you to everyone on Trip Advisor for this recommendation. I am passing it forward for the next lucky person who reads this!

Room Tip: We read here to ask for a canal view on an upper floor for the peace and quiet in the evening. It wa...
