The location of the hotel is perfect and close to everything you might want to visit. We were given a beautiful canal view room on the top floor which had an amazing view and a small balcony. The room had a lot of natural light and was very clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. We weren't charged for our late check-out which was also very nice.
Although breakfast was very expensive, just the experience of eating in that grand old cafe Americain was worth every cent.

The room was nice we were upgraded to a junior suite so it was very spacious with amenities like bathrobes/slippers, but the furniture was similar to a dorm room, it needs some updating.

On our third day my husbands wallet was stolen from the room and the hotel did nothing to help with this stressful situation, they even tried to have us pay for the long distance call to cancel our credit cards. We were treated like it was our fault and it was very disappointing for the price paid for the 3 nights we stayed.
Safety and Security, along with guest service is of primary importance to me when I travel and it was apparent this was not of primary importance for this hotel. Their colleagues need some training in guest service.
I caution you if you book at this hotel make sure you take all your valuables with you at all times!!!!! And don't expect any help from anyone.

Situated in a very central location, the hotel was perfect for heading into town and enjoying the canals. The staff were lovely, and the hotel itself was very attractive and clean.
On the downside: Our room was tiny with a miniscule window which looked out onto a concrete block- we had no natural light at all!
The hotel has no parking, and the cheapest parking was 40 euros per day.
The food at the hotel was average, and there was a (very cute) mouse in the restuarant.
Breakfast was 20 euros per person.

Although we had a room on the lower end of the price spectrum, one night there was a VERY loud party in the hotel bar, right below our room. The staff very kindly relocated us to the deluxe room. This was expectedly more attractive than our room, with a large window, but felt very bare and not very well decorated.

All in all, we were rather dissapointed with the hotel, as from its pictures it looks as if it would be fabulous!

It's a very good hotel, really well located: 10 minutes walk from the two Amsterdam's main museums (Van Gogh and Rijks) and on the outermost of the city channels (you can reach Dam Place in less than 15 minutes).
It's an expensive hotel. We decided not to have breakfast, since they sell it for about 29 euros (close to the hotel there are plenty of bruin cafes where you can have a wonderful breakfast for less than 7 euros).
The only negative point: we have chosen this hotel since we meant to travel around Nederland by car, and their website stated "Available parking for guests". They didn't mention that the parking fee is 30 euros for the first day, decreasing by some euros the following days. It's not exactly a bargain...

Stayed at the American Hotel in Amsterdam in August /08 and was thankful that we had booked such a central location. Within walking distance to pretty much everything. Close to the museums as well.
Staff were very welcoming and the room was great. The room had a large balcony overlooking the fountain which we could sit out on and enjoy the atmosphere of the square after busy days.
Only downside was the noise at times, primarily sirens.
The hotel just won an award for 2008 as a top hotel in the area.
Part of the Eden Hotel group.
I'd recommend you check their website before booking and see if it is the type of hotel for you.
No complaints from this end.
