We recently stayed in this hotel in 2 rooms for 3 nights. I requested canal view rooms but we got side road view rooms. We didn't make a fuss as we were happy with the hotel and location. However, as everyone else seems to have mentioned previously, there were no bathrobes in the rooms. When I asked at reception if they could arrange bathrobes I was greeted by an extremely sullen female with a bad attitude who told me she would 'sort it'....needless to say they never appeared! Why advertise bathrobes if you aren't going to supply them? Overall I found the hotel quite charming and the location was ideal but the reception staff need training in customer service! I am a Travel Agent and would I recommend this hotel to my clients?....would have to say 'not unless their service improves immensely and they live up to their 4 star rating'!

Dear Guest,
Thank you for your visit and your review posting with constructive comments. Indeed it is ennoying when a promised service is not delivered. In your case the bathrobes. Our apologies for this ommission which, understandibly, leads to frustration. Needless to say that we shall continue to focus on service minded attitude and behaviour. In order to convince you that you made the right choice and will do so again. With best regards,

We found the Amsterdam American Hotel to be perfect for our needs. It was clean, had a nice lobby and offered WI-FI free in the lobby and in the rooms. We ate a meal at their restaurant which was great. We passed on Brunch on Sunday because it was rather pricey for us since we don't eat large breakfasts. But, all in all, it was a great choice. It was an east walk to many fine museums and restaurants and it was easy to get a taxi when we needed one.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back of the hotel for a quieter experience. We did and got one. We had no pr...

The only good thing about this hotel is the location. The rooms are lousy, too much noise coming from the street and the theather next to the hotel. Breakfast is very average. During check out we have a misunderstanding, maybe it was my mistake that ı could not expressed myself clearly but the young man at the frost Desk was very rude by both verbally and body language that ı had to remind him that he cannot treat, speak or punish customers that way in hospitality business. He did not care at all so never reccomend hotels where the guests are treated such.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your visit and your review. We are sorry to read that the mutual misunderstanding caused frustration. Should there still be any confusion, please contact us. The sounds/noise from the streets and theatres in this vibrant city centre are difficult to control. You can always request a more quiet inner courtyard room. With best regards,

We stayed in tis hotel many years ago It is ideally situated for the Rijks , Stedelik and Van Goch Museums, no more than ten minutes wallk.
We booked a DE LUXE room . We arrived early as we had came by Eurostar/Thalys and knew we could not have our room until 3 pm. As it was raining we waited in the foyer. At 3 we asked for our room and were told it would not be ready until 3.30.3:30 we asked agin and were told it was not ready"Bur it was such a lovely room it was worth waiting for" We were given a voucher for a drink in the bar. At 4 we were giventhe key. The room bore no resemblance to the illustation on the web page but even worse there was a terrible smell. We discovered that on one side of the windowthe plaster had fallen off with brick showing,on the other flaking plaster with damp patches. We refused to take this and after a discussion by reception we were shown a room that matched that of the web and was a de luxe room. Why were we shown the first one and why could we not have been shown the second room earlier since it was obvoulsy ready ? No answer to that. The room was very pleasant but the batbhroom was tiny - if the wshbasin was lower, one could have sat on the loo and washed without having to bend forward. On the other hand the towels were large and fluffy where as the toilet paper was almost transparent. We should have had bathrobes but we just could not be bothered to continue complaining.
The breakfast buffet was very good indeed with enormous choice. The porters were very helpful but the reception staff were offhand and unsmiling. We would stay again if we could be sure that we would be given what we asked for and not passed off with a standard smelly room and if the reception staff could learn to crack a smile.

We recently returned from a 4 day break in Amsterdam. Obviously we were staying in the American Hotel.

Our room was very well equipped and the bed was VERY comfortable.

The staff were all very helpful.

Alas we didn't take advantage of the hotels bar, restaurant or fitness centre as the city was out there waiting to be explored

I had always wanted to stay here, so last year, I did. The room was lovely, overlooking a canal, and we were able to open the window! We didn't keep it open long, because of the A.C., and because no one warns you that in non-AC hotels, the ones near canals attract turbo mosquitoes!

The best part of the Hotel, though, is it's dining room. The food isn't that great, it's a bit pricey, the service could be better, but it's a beautiful Art Deco design and it's haunted!! Mata Hari held her wedding reception here. It's definitely worth having lunch here once. Order the cheapest things on the menu and enjoy the atmosphere.

Whenever I've gone down the back stairs to the restroom, I've always felt an eerie presence! It's really fantastic for those whose spirituality is tuned to such things!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the canal or overlooking Leidse Square.
