“Great staff, nice room once moved!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

We have stayed in the hotel before and were given a canal view room with a large window that opened out. This time we were late getting to the hotel and had some issues with our luggage. The reception staff were so helpful and caring and provided us with all the help they could, the give us each a drink whilst we waited at reception whilst our room was sorted out. We then went up to our room 521, the room was awful, it was an old room, our view consisted of a wall, you opened the door and could see nothing, if the wall was not there we would have had a view over the canal. Due to the issues with our luggage and the bad room I went to ask to be moved straight away but I was kindly told the hotel was full and that I could be moved first thing in the morning. The next morning we were moved to room 312, this was a great room with a view over the canal, like the one we had before. The reception staff also left in the room a fruit basket and a bottle of wine with a card saying sorry for the problems we had, this was a lovely gesture. The breakfast in the hotel is great, one of the reasons for our return. There is lots of choice in the buffet and you can also have eggs, bacon, hash browns and waffles cooked to order. The prosecco is also a nice touch, try to get a table by the side window or the front as its great, we sat there for nearly 2 hours one morning. All in all a great hotel but do email or call in advance to get the refurbished room as I would not pay for the first room again!!
Great staff, great breakfast and the location is one of the best in Amsterdam. Leidseplien has something for everybody, nice cocktail bars try ienjoy and little Buddha, the bulldog is great for drinking and smoking weed as there are not many places where you can do both, the happy feelings coffeeshop is also great for water pipes. There are lots of restaurants in the area, some not the best quality but some are lovely. If you are staying in this hotel get the 197 bus straight to the airport oly takes about 20 to 25 mins and runs every 15 to 20 minutes the bus stop is right outside the hotel and saves having to get the train and tram, it costs 4 euro.

This is one of those situations where the average and poor reviews on Tripadvisor are the ones I should have listened to. Reception staff are dreadful - they serve you when they want, in a cold and indifferent manner, had no flexibility on check in and check out times, and even questioned us in a very rude way as to whether our name was really our name! The older concierge luckily made up for them - he was helpful and charming.
Room was dreadful. We had asked for and been given a canal view since I had noted the issues with noise on the front facing rooms. The room was huge, but dominated by a stained carpet in a classic floral "pub" design, with oak veneer furniture universally chipped, gouged and stained. The large bed was two large singles pushed together, and with the VERY annoying two duvets put on it rather than one large one. What is the point of that?? Bathroom is tiny compared to the room, with inadequate ventilation and a truly concerning mustard painted colour scheme. This is at best a 3 star hotel, certainly not 4!
For our rate of Euro160 per night, we did not get breakfast. Bear in mind that if you book through a booking site, you wlll still have to pay the city tax on top of the quoted rates when you check out.
Housekeeping was good but the hallways are dreary, in poor repair and musty. Location is right on Leidseplein which is either good or bad depending on your intention for your stay.
Bar area was awful - we went down with high expectations based on the reviews and the constant reminders of all the "famous" people who have stayed there. Well, seats are covered in red stained fabric, the furniture is that sort of Ibis breakfast room style with powder coated steel legs and cheap fabric colours. The old pillars have been clad in what looks like painted MDF. Service here was fine, but prices very high.
All in all it was not a good stay - 50% because of the rooms, and 50% because of the truly awful reception staff. I would not return.

Great hotel, excellent location, attentive staff, spacious rooms. Everything about the place was first rate. Tram stop just a few feet away. A bit noisy at night but that's because people in Amsterdam seem to like to have fun at night. Nothing wrong with that.

Room Tip: If you don't like your room, the staff will change it for you without any trouble.

Fantastic location, in the heart of town. Price is correct (not abusive as some other hotels). Staff very helpful, knowledgeble, perfect command of English. Rooms are fantastic (ask for canal view). Mezanine rooms are bigger but lack the nice varandah of other floors. Don't forget to dine at least once in the hotel restaurant. Food is good, price is right and the beauty of the restaurant is a must see. On the reception desk, Ms. Pavan Singh is a great asset for the hotel - always available, always with a smile

Room Tip: Rooms are big and very comfortable (ask for canal view). Mezanine rooms are bigger but lack the nice...

By far the best thing about this hotel is the location, it's about as great as you can get. But then for me, it started to go downhill. I saw nothing of the friendly staff everyone talks about and I didn't get one of the lovely rooms with a view, merely a very small room with far too much furniture, with a view of the air conditioning units, which as it was the hottest weekend of the year, were whirring away all night and very noisy, to the point I could hear the units outside even when I had my air conditioning on! I requesting an alternate room but was told they were full so I made do. I can't comment on the bar as I didn't go in but I would recommend against going into the restaurant, it's over priced, under staffed, very slow service and perfectly average in quality, there are far better places to go for food. I would probably stay there again as it's incredibly convenient for where I needed to be and often competitively priced but I would definitely be checking in as early as possible and requesting a different room if I was facing the air conditioning units again.

This was our second visit to the hotel and even better from the last time. I requested a room overlooking the canal as we were celebrating our 35th wedding anniversity. To our surprise and delight we were upgraded to an executive room on the mezzanine floor and also there was a voucher for complimentary drinks in the bar left in our room. This was a lovely gesture we found the staff very polite friendly and helpful the food in the hotel is lovely and it is so pleasant to eat on the terrace behind the fountain outside.
The bus stop which takes u direct to the airport is right outside the hotel and museums restaurants and shops are all within short walking distance. On leaving the hotel the receptionist also asked if we had enjoyed our anniversary weekend a nice ending to our perfect weekend Thank u to all the staff and hotel management for your kindness to us we will be back next year to see u all.
