I visit Amsterdam regulary and have stayed in the American many times over the last three years mostly for business and on two occasions pleasure, it can't be bad because I keep on going back. Location is perfect to enjoy the tourist attractions with a selection of trams nearby. The staff have always been warm and helpful and the bar staff are very friendly, great if you are travelling alone. It is a city hotel so there is some noise to be expected as anywhere; rooms at the back on higher floors are quieter.
The gym is a bit basic, no free weights but the Sauna is great. A number of the rooms are decorated in fun styles and quite quirky but without doubt the best feature is the beautiful art deco dining room, this is stunning. Beds are comfortable and large, rooms I have stayed in are spacious with kettle, the breakfast is always pretty good. I have only eaten dinner a couple of times but the food was agreeable if not exceptional on both occasions however room service platters are usually disappointing. No need to worry though as there are lots of excellent restaurants nearby so you have plenty of choice for eating out.
The only problem we experienced was that the taxis create havoc on weekend nights, it sounds as though they learned to drive in Nepal where the horn is for leaning on whenever possible. however, I always feel good staying here so I sincerely hope the Police are dealing with the bonkers taxi drivers for w/e visitors - this will then be my favourite Amsterdam hotel.
