“Great stay in strategic location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2012

Hotel is strategically located in leidseplein, close to vondelpark and museumplein, while dam square is abt 10-15mins walk. It's facing a canal. Plenty of comedy shows, restaurants, bars including hard rock cafe etc after sunset. Hotel building is art deco & the restaurant, Cafe American are also mentioned as a place to be seen in a guidebook which features the most amazing decor and great lemon pie. Stayed for 3 nights & was upgraded to deluxe room with leidseplein view. Room and bathroom was spacious. Sleep was very comfortable with firm mattress, soft blankets and pillows except that the walls are thin so noisy if u have neighbours. Toiletries offered are "ritual" brand which smells amazing. The hotel offers free business centre which is convenient to print out online check in boarding pass or online tickets etc.Overall service is good with prompt attention to requests. Overall, great stay & would certainly stay here again.

We stayed here last weekend - March 31 to April 4 to visit our son and celebrate his birthday. The room was on the canal side as requested, a good size, very clean and comfortable.
On the Sunday night my husband, who is diabetic, had a very severe hypo - very low blood sugars with fitting. Help arrived as soon as I rang down. Two very well trained members of staff, Paul and Ribiqa, helped me with my husband until the paramedics arrived, and saw us out to the ambulance. They dealt with the drama of a guest going out of the 4th floor window calmly and efficiently - it couldn't have been smoother. Ribiqa packed a bag for us, and all staff facilitated our exit well.
The hotel rang the hospital to see how we were, paid for our taxi and welcomed us back even though it was gone midnight.Food and drink was provided free of charge, and all night staff showed a huge degree of concern.
The follow up was amazing too. We saw managers and general managers who knew all about it, asked after my husband's progress, and took the time to sit with us and chat.
The kindness and care shown was completely genuine. I can't thank all those involved enough. Paul took especial care to make sure the rest of our trip was good. I feel like we have made friends through this somewhat traumatic experience.
We plan to stay at the hotel whenever we go to Holland now. We travel there a number of times a year to see our son, and really appreciate the good choice we made.
The hotel is so central, and you can get a bus to the airport for only 4 Euros from just outside. We had no problems with noise, and slept very well. The room was always cleaned, no matter what time of day we left it.
And a tip for those who thought it was a bit 'tired'. Marcel, one of the general managers, said the same himself, and told us that a sympathetic and floor by floor renovation is to take place soon, so all the more reason to stay there!
Thanks again, everyone.

Room Tip: Go for the canal side rooms. Quiet and comfortable.

We booked a large room at the Amsterdam American, and it was quite nice -- on a corner overlooking the square, with plenty of room for a roll-away bed. The hotel itself is a landmark, and it is really well located -- we easily walked to everything we wanted to see and do in Amsterdam.
There was some noise in the afternoon from the tram, cars, and people. But then came Friday night, and our nice corner perch over the Leidseplein became very, very noisy with the sounds of traffic, clubs, and partiers. If you are planning on staying out late to party in Amsterdam, none of this will be a problem. We weren't, and it was. But, this was not the hotel's fault, and they moved us to a different room for our second night. The second room was on the canal side of the hotel and, while not as interesting, was also very large, with two queen beds. We slept wonderfully.
Breakfast in the beautiful dining room was expensive, but there was a lot of very good food to choose from. The room service continental breakfast for 1 could easily feed 2 people.
Our bottom line: if you are there over the weekend and want to sleep, ask for a canal side room. If you are partying or it is during the week, don't worry too much about it.

The rooms are comfortably big and clean. If you get lucky, like I was, you could get upgraded to a suite, which was good enough to host 4 persons.

Even if you do not choose to stay in the hotel, you should visit its bar & restaurant and try their dishes. Prices are adequate to the room and the quality of the hotel.

The personnel is friendly and helpful.

Wi-Fi for free.

Overall, if one can afford it, this is the choice he has to make!

Room Tip: Try to get the front facade rooms, to get an overview of the square.

We stayed here for 4 nights in August 2012 and really enjoyed our stay. Biggest plus is the great location, close to public transport, Vondelpark, music venues, canals. The room was large and clean and comfortable. We slept well in the comfortable bed. The staff were helpful, though reception was quite busy at times, possibly could do with more staff. Amsterdam is expensive, and we found this place a bit dear, but reasonable in comparison to others. We'd stay here again if we needed a hotel in Amsterdam. As an aside, we also stayed with friends in Amsterdam, who said "wow, that's where the rock stars stay!"... Evidenced by the autograph book opened to the page of Amy Winehouse during our stay.

We just returned from our vacation in Amsterdam and our stay in the American Hotel. The location of this beautiful building was perfect! We had a deluxe room with a canal view. The room was very clean and comfortable with everything you need. The bathroom was small but a full size shower and terry robes.
