“Location location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2012 via mobile

I stayed here for a work conference, so may be judging the hotel harshly, but I wouldnt choose to stay here if i went to Amsterdam again

Pros: good location, reception staff were lovely, very helpful

Cons: room was so dark i couldnt find anything (take a torch). It was also the smallest room ive ever had - just enough room to walk around the bed, but nowhere to put suitcase

Noisy - because of location, my colleagues and i were woken by drunk people yelling alot through the night, and trams/ buses early in morning (take earplugs)

Food hit and miss - i had a delicious sandwich on last day, but my colleagues had a really bad meal one night that saw them all in burger king afterwards

This is the perfect hotel to stay in Amsterdam, and also the best value! When arrived at night, looking from outside I thought to myself, hooo my G**, I don’t want to sleep here; yes, from outside it does look like the house of Dracula. I honestly believe that this hotel needs some lights and a face cleaning, because, once you get in, it just change completely. The hotel deco is very cool, still charmy, and with great facility service, like free internet with fantastic PCs available, mobile phone chargers for many brands, the gym is small but complete, the bar just looks gorgeous with this classic American twist, very lightly corridors… etc the rooms are spacious and with all you need away from home, very complete mini bar, not cheap items, but you have a huge range of options. Didn’t like the fact that the bed was arranged for 2 (king) but the bed clothes were as for single, so during the sleep you feel a little cold, especially in case of a couple. The hotel is located in the best place possible, in a nice area, and walking distance from all important things to see in the city. The concierge is just effective and absolutely kind, can’t forget the special note to Abdel; great job Abdel, many thanks. The rest of the staff, were kind and helpful in general. Congratzzzz

I booked this hotel last minute for New Years Eve, after recommendation from a friend, for myself, a friend and my sister and her partner. The hotel reception was beautifully decorated so i had high expectations for the room. When checking in we found the receptionist (female) to be very dismissive and actually quite rude. We enquired about local parking facilities as we had drove (8 hours!) and wanted to move the car from outside the building. The man on reception was trying to help and the female member of staff kept interrupting him as he was explaining where to go. When filling in all the paperwork the female receptionist was very condescending and looked like she really couldnt be bothered speaking to us. I had booked one double room (for my sister) and one twin room (for myself) online but upon arrival was told that it was 2 twin rooms. When i informed her that one room should be a double she waved her hand at me to stop me from talking so she could continue her conversation with the man behind the desk. We decided to take a look at the rooms as we were all tired from a long day of travelling. Our room was nice and clean although in need of some restoration but it was comfortable. The room was very hot during our stay and we were disappointed to find that the window did not open. I know its winter but it can get quite stuffy when there is heating on. The was a thermostat on the wall which we lowered but it didnt seem to make a difference. The amenities were good, coffee and tea making facilities were in the room as well as a hairdryer, TV (with quite a few english speaking channels), mini bar (over priced but arent they all!) and iron and ironing board. My sister returned to reception to enquire about getting a double room which they still had available. When they went to view the room, the standard wasnt as good as the twin so they decided to keep the original. The staff in the restaurant/bar were very friendly and attentive. When checking out, a different receptionist dealt with us and she was polite and efficient. The porter, who help us with our bags at check out was also very nice. It was a shame that the first night tainted our experience with the hotel, i hope it was an isolated incident.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a window that opens!

The staff was friendly and the room is in a relatively good condition considering it's a historic building. Walking distance to everywhere but make sure you have a good pair of shoe as the sidewalk in Europe is bumpy!

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room if you are a light sleeper.

Hotel was amazing art deco monument with an american twist. Room was great and big, the staff could not do enough fo us when we asked for extra hangers and also directions to tourist places and also where the best night clubs were. They made phone calls and went on the internet on our behalf. Got the room we requested over looking canal and the reception was very intersting with pictures and paintings of American rock stars! The ajoining restaurant looked fantastic but was unfortunately booked up Christmas day, it also was a tadge too expensive for our budget. The bar in the hotel was funky with good atmosphere. So glad we found this hotel as it was such an excellent location with bars, clubs and restaurants on the door step. Also a much more up market location and nicer place to stay than if we had picked somewhere in central amsterdam. Having said that central Amsterdam was still only 15 mins walk away and that was where the red light district was, thats if you wanted to have a look and a laugh! Or even quicker by trams which were convieniently located directly outside the hotel - numbers 1, 2 and 5 would get you there.
There were some of the main museums very close by including the Van Gough and also there was an area near by that had a comedy cafe and a Hard Rock cafe.
The other places of interest to myself like the Anne Frank house were still all within walking distance. In fact no where is really too far to walk, and the walks themselves are very pleasant admiring the different architcture of the buildings, churches and houses. Just watch out for the bikes, they come flying around every corner and everyone seems to own one young and old!
Would definately stay at this hotel again, loved it and the location.

Room Tip: The rooms over looking canal very nice, but also the rooms at front of hotel had a great view of eve...

We stayed her for New Years Eve as the balconies have a great view for the fireworks that go off all across the city. Our room was an OK size but on the small side. The bed was super comfy and everything was perfectly clean. I didn't have breakfast there this year but I have had it there quite a few times and it is always nice. The champagne is always an added bonus.
Reception staff were very friendly. We ordered a taxi as we were leaving one arrive within 5 minutes. There is a taxi rank about 5 minutes walk away which I think is cheaper than getting one from the hotel but as the weather was so awful we decided to get one from the hotel.

We changed from our previous regular hotel - Dikker and Thijs - and found the American to be much better value and this now is our 5th year staying.
Location is great - on the Leidseplein and easy access to tram nos1.2 and 5 which bring you direct from Central Station.
Hotel is very impressive inside and out.
Reception excellent.
Our room this year was smaller but this time we had a balcony overlooking the canal running at the side of the hotel. The double bed was not really comfortable and we arranged to have the feather pilow alternative when we arrived. Wardrobe space tiny - about a third is taken up by the ironing board. There was a bedside table/lamp on only one side of the double bed so one of us had to rely on the desk lamp to read by. The tv was at the side of the bed so cricked necks all round when attempting to watch from bed. But the room was quiet and sleep was uninterrupted despite this being over the New Year period.
The dining room must rank with the world's best and the buffet breakfast is very good. Things here indicated a little falling in standards - the table cloth strips were no longer provided on the tables; champagne for bucks fizz had disappeared; tomato sauce/mustard were not displayed ad when asked for mustard was not available. But there is no denying the ambiance of the art deco room or the quality of those waiting on tables.
Will definitely be making another return visit

Room Tip: choose side of the hotel - overlooks canal but much quieter - and avoid entresol level at all costs...
