“4 Star Reception 0 Star Rooms”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2010

Arrived at impressive looking hotel but disgusted at the state of the accomodation. Dirty, grubby & extremely dated. Well aware that rooms in Amsterdam are small! Awful smells coming from kitchens (thank god I didn`t eat in it). Informed the friendly staff of this but they all had head colds on that day so they couldn`t smell anything!!!
Great location but stay somewhere else for gods sake....it`s a kip!

on reading reviews after we had booked we were a bit dubious on arrival.. the hotel lobby and reception are really plush but the rooms could do with a facelift, our room 124 was quite spacious but most are not, very clean, very friendly and helpful staff..good location 1 min walk from dam square..

Perfectly located hotel for walking every direction in lovely Amsterdam. Staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was a buffet in a large DR with windows fronting on the street with more than enough selections to fill us for a day of sightseeing. Room was adequate in size, comfortable and clean. Could use more wattage for reading at night but that would be our only complaint! We will definitely stay at this hotel again.

This is the second time i have stayed in this hotel, last time was 7 years ago. First time was with my girlfriend, this time was with a friend who was running the marathon.

The location is ideal as it is right on Dam square and only a 5 minute walk from central station.

One arrival i had forgotten how nice the hotel looks from outside. Especially at night when its all lit up.

At the reception i cant say we was welcomed, the staff could be a lot more friendly. Check in didn't take too long and we was pointed to the lift.

The Room
Our room was a decent size, Two very comfy good sized single beds, TV, coffee/Tea facilities, safe. The bathroom was very clean and a nice size too. The only problem i had with the room was it was freezing, the maids always left the window open, and during the night the radiator didn't work. Didn't book breakfast as the hotel wanted €19 pp per day.

The bar is quite nice, but very quiet with no life. If you didn't know this, the hotel is the old heineken brewery.

Depending on what you are going to Amsterdam for, this hotel is a only minutes walk from the Red light district, Bars & coffeeshops. There is a tram(1) stop right outside the hotel which will take you to Leidseplein and beyond and the other side of the royal palace is another tram(4, 16) stop that will take you to Rembrandt square. There is a shopping centre next to the hotel and a supermarket 400 yards past that.

Vondel Park is very nice and worth a walk round, Don't forget the giant IAmsterdam letters.
Also if you fancy somewhere cheap to eat, find a palace called Burger Meester, delicious freshly made burgers.

All in all I would use this Hotel agin if the price was right.

Arrived about 16:00.
Happy staff at reception, cracking jokes and really happy to help you.
Got to room 131 which was in the middle of the hotel. The room was a bit dark but nice and clean. The bed was two singles put together, but fine, one thing I would say was there was only two pillows, not much but, what can I say, I like my pillows. Went over to the window, opened the curtains, and saw the massive boiler or ventilation system which was making a right racket. beyond the boiler was other rooms so, no view either. the only reason we didn't ask for a room change, is that, we were only there for two days so we thought it wasn't worth it.
This hotel isn't a Four star, its a Three. The only reason the Van Cleve gets a 4 is that its in a great location and it has a lift.

central location good but sandwiched between 2 busy roads so noise 24/24. rooms poorly appointed - no hooks, tiny hanging space, only one bedside table, lighting wrongly placed and poor, cramped and shabby. Dining room chaotic, grubby, poorly organised. Breakfast was mediocre. Staff pleasant but all seemed to be trainees so very willing but not always able. What a shame.

I booked this hotel on Expedia and it was a fantastic deal!
The hotel was very easy to find and a short walk from the train station. We arrived very early in the morning and the hotel staff kept our luggage as we wandered around. Down the street is Albert Heijn and there you will find food and wine to take back to your room if you want. We loved going there for beer and wine for our nights before bed.
The staff was very friendly and the breakfast was wonderful. We liked the hotel so much we booked another 2 nights upon our arrival back to Amsterdam.
Hotel is a short walk from the Red Light District and flower market.
Our room was small but that is to be expected in Europe. It was very cute and we loved the beds - clean and comfy.
