“Excellent lodging near Dam Square”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2013

I really like this hotel. It's got character and is definitely not a chain, cookie-cutter hotel. The rooms are a little small, but this is prime Amsterdam, so convenient to the best the city has to offer! I enjoyed the hotel's restaurant rather a lot (check out the numbered steaks), and coffee and breakfast in the morning are excellent here as well. The staff are courteous and accommodating, and I would most definitely stay here again. When you consider how excellently placed in Amsterdam this place is, combine that with the fact that it is neither a knock-off hotel nor a cheapie hotel (the rooms are clean), and figure in that the place really has personality, it's a really good accommodation.

We booked this for a short break in Amsterdam, partly influenced by other positive reviews on here. We weren't disappointed. Situated near Dam Square and with excellent access to the Central Station and tram routes, this hotel was perfect for sightseeing and exploring. The staff were charming and very helpful. The room, although smallish, was well appointed and spotlessly clean. We were facing an inner atrium and so it was very quiet, too. There are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants within easy walking distance, as are some of the more notorious tourist attractions. We'll be staying here again. Highly recommended.

Great location, really close to the dam and all Amsterdam has to offer. The rooms in the hotel were tiny and basic think Travelodge at best and you won't go far wrong! Bed barely big enough for two and you had to squeeze into the bathroom. Very expensive for what it was

How did this hotel get 4stars???? The rooms are way too small. You will way about 10 mins for the lift to come down. All that they have in the room is a tv. Nothing else!!!!! The cleaning staff keep nocking on your door ever morning when there is a do not come in sigh!!!!!! I would give this place a one star for where it is.

We stayed at this hotel in October 2013 for a family members 50th birthday . I emailed hotel in advance and we were upgraded to a lovely room overlooking the front , also providing a lovely gift of fresh fruits and chocolates . The staff are all lovely , even recommending a fabulous Indonesian restaurant and making the dinner reservation for us . The bar is superb , full of character with delft tiles around the walls . Bar tender looking after us was very hospitable. We would certainly come back here to explore more of this beautiful city

Room Tip: Room on higher floor at the front

Hotel Die Port Van Cleve is a boutique hotel right in front of Dam Square (the heart of the city centre) in Amsterdam. Its reception is small and faces the lifts. The rooms to our surprise are extremely small with large french style windows. the toilets are also small. We had booked two rooms as we were a family and were in town for sightseeing.

We were unhappy with the size of the rooms but the location couldn't have been better. There was a restaurant/coffee shop as well but we didn't make use of it. The hotel was surrounded with Indian restaurants, Pizzerias, a big supermarket, cafes and bakeries that serve amazing waffles and fresh breakfast. Just outside was the tram line and at 7 minutes walk was the main train station which had trains to many of the amazing cities in Europe like Antwerp, etc. We even took a ferry from outside to see the canals and historical buildings of the city.

Staying in this hotel at that place, changed our perception that Amsterdam is a place for adults. We were a family and we enjoyed the country side by taking a bus from Dam Square and seeing how Cheese was made. In totality our stay was nice but could have opted for better rooms, even though service was decent.

Room Tip: Choose this hotel only if you don't mind small rooms. Eating and sightseeing is very convenient...

We stayed three nights in the Die Port van Cleve. All the staff we encountered were exemplary and spoke excellent English. There was one doorman who appeared to me to be uncertain that we should be entering the hotel but didn't actually challenge us.
All the hotel facilities were very good. My only disappointment was with the size of the room and lack of WiFi reception in probably one of the most isolated rooms.
The location was great and close to the central station.
I would return but maybe pay a little more for a bigger room.
