“Small hotel-in a large city centre”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

Hotel Die Port Van Cleve is a boutique hotel right in front of Dam Square (the heart of the city centre) in Amsterdam. Its reception is small and faces the lifts. The rooms to our surprise are extremely small with large french style windows. the toilets are also small. We had booked two rooms as we were a family and were in town for sightseeing.

We were unhappy with the size of the rooms but the location couldn't have been better. There was a restaurant/coffee shop as well but we didn't make use of it. The hotel was surrounded with Indian restaurants, Pizzerias, a big supermarket, cafes and bakeries that serve amazing waffles and fresh breakfast. Just outside was the tram line and at 7 minutes walk was the main train station which had trains to many of the amazing cities in Europe like Antwerp, etc. We even took a ferry from outside to see the canals and historical buildings of the city.

Staying in this hotel at that place, changed our perception that Amsterdam is a place for adults. We were a family and we enjoyed the country side by taking a bus from Dam Square and seeing how Cheese was made. In totality our stay was nice but could have opted for better rooms, even though service was decent.

Room Tip: Choose this hotel only if you don't mind small rooms. Eating and sightseeing is very convenient...

We stayed three nights in the Die Port van Cleve. All the staff we encountered were exemplary and spoke excellent English. There was one doorman who appeared to me to be uncertain that we should be entering the hotel but didn't actually challenge us.
All the hotel facilities were very good. My only disappointment was with the size of the room and lack of WiFi reception in probably one of the most isolated rooms.
The location was great and close to the central station.
I would return but maybe pay a little more for a bigger room.

Checked into the hotel on Friday afternoon, and then heard a chap at the door on Saturday night. There stood the hotel receptionist with a letter advising us we were being charged 250 euros for smoking in our room. Now, why would we come to Amsterdam and sit and smoke in our rooms? i was then showed pictures which apparently proved that we were indeed smoking. these 'pictures' were black and white cheap images which showed some cigarettes lying on the desk. Apparently the cleaner told them our room was ''full of smoke' and her supervisor agreed. My partner left the room each time he smoked, and could be clearly seen exiting the building to smoke outside.
It completely ruined our evening. Action could have been taken before we retreated to our hotel room for some well needed chill out time. We obviously didnt meet their usual clientele and feel we were picked on for standing out from the crowd ( business men etc).

October 2013.
Just back from our second visit for my wife and I here and it was excellent.
Reasonably priced by Amsterdam standards the hotel has a good restaurant and a period style bar with an amazing tiled frieze.
Since our last trip the has been renovated and our room was spacious, well presented, clean and had a charming balcony overlooking the road to the front of the hotel.
Perfect location adjacent to Dam square affords easy access to the city.
Lovely hotel with friendly helpful staff.
A Gym would have made this perfect but all the same really enjoyed the place.
Well worth considering if staying in Amsterdam.

Room Tip: Our room benefitted from the balcony.

Just back from a fantastic weekend in the Die Port Van Cleve with family and friends celebrating our anniversary. Hotel location is excellent, breakfast was superb. Staff were so friendly and to top off our weekend we were upgraded to a suite. Thanks for a making our weekend very enjoyable. Will definitely be back again. Very soon.

Its not often am surprised as much as I was by this hotel (in a good way). First, despite being just off the Dam square, the price is quite reasonable. Now based on 'reasonable' prices in Amsterdam, I had an impression of what to expect (small room, lack of facilities, etc.), but Die Port was not like that at all. To go through things in order...
1. Reception was efficient and friendly (both checkin and checkout)
2. Room was huge (by Amsterdam standards) and immaculate. My only complaint would be my particular room did not get any natural light, but as I was out between 08:00 and 18:00, it didn't really affect me.
3. Tea/Coffee making facilities in the room!
4. Location is superb (very quiet room despite a fair in the Dam)
5. Wireless was OK - stable but not really good enough for video calls
6. Breakfast was on par with other hotels (expensive unless you like big breakfasts every day)
7. Room service was quick, tasty and quite reasonably priced.
8. Bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in.

Summary. Excellent hotel, excellent location, excellent staff. Would stay there again.

Room Tip: If you are going to be spending significant time in the room, ask for an outward facing room.

Great location right beside Dam Square was under refurbishment when I was there but found the hotel staff very pleasant. Rooms were very comfortable and spacious and the food was good also booked on line and the price was reasonable.
