“Nice Hotel, Barely an Elevator”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013

The story of this hotel property is really cool, but there the elevator was TINY, went very slow, and our luggage could not fit. The hike up the stairs was not pretty. It is in a GREAT location to everything in the city, so highly recommended for that. I don't remember there being air conditioning - could be painful in the summer for some people. The rooms were nice, and I had a balcony that overlooked Amsterdam, so that was gorgeous. The bathrooms were clean.

This wasn't the most affordable hotel for business or leisure travelers. I've stayed in other places in Amsterdam that were far better price-wise. I would recommend this place for a lightly packed business traveler, but don't know that I would recommend it for a leisure traveler.

Recently stayed for fourth visit and not disappointed. Easy #s 1,2,5 tram ride from central station and #5 tram to RijksMuseum and Van Gogh Museum, main purpose of our visit.
Hotel staff very sharp, quickly moved us after first night when street noise bothered us. WiFi worked great. Food in hotel adaquate, bar pleasant.
Air conditioning was a big plus.

Room Tip: Rooms around courtyard best for light sleepers.

This hotel was perfect for a first time vacation. We were practically on Dam Square but without any of the noise or disturbance and the train station was within a 10-15 minute walk. The hotel was clean, the building well presented and the staff very helpful. The rooms aren't massive but, to be honest, it was 33 degrees most days so spending time in the hotel room wasn't going to be an option! We would definitely stay here again!

Stayed here earlier this month on our first visit to Amsterdam. Excellent location adjacent to Dam Square in the centre of the city. Hotel very clean and the staff are all very friendly, helpful and speak excellent English. We paid extra for an upgraded twin room (Room 229) on the front of the hotel overlooking the street with a very small balcony. A little traffic noise but not uncomfortable.
Excellent range of food for the buffet breakfast. Certainly recommend this hotel.

Stayed here a few times before and during refurbishment and so its nice to have a refurbished room. My room was average size though the bed was set back in a recess which - though an understandable use of space - didn't give the best impression. I did have a double room but if there had have been two of us then it would have been cramped especially when we would have been getting dressed (as the space around the wardrobe is very small). The refurb does make the rooms nicer and the air con worked well.

Of course, its a great location and I'd recommend this place.

Stayed here recently at the beginning of a bicycling vacation in Holland. The location was great, but the bathroom is almost bigger than the room. For two of us sharing the room, it was quite tight. They provided a hot pot to make tea, but it was challenging to find a place in the room where you could set it up. But in the end, you're not in Amsterdam to stay in your room, and the hotel is VERY convenient to the tram lines, the Dam Square (right across the street), and you can even walk to the Central Station (although it's a bit of a hike with a suitcase). The hotel building used to be the original Heineken Brewery site, and the bar downstairs is the real thing from when it was a brewery. Nice bit of history. Front desk staff were friendly and helfpul. Breakfast was not included, and would have been an additional 16 Euros per person -- not worth it. Eat elsewhere.

Room Tip: Ask for a "Superior" room when you check in, if available. I understand they have more ro...

Enjoyed a really delicious meal at the "bar" in this hotel & the prices were very reasonable. They offer an option of regular sized portions & "taster" portions (small-sized)-------being a small eater, the taster portions were perfectly sized for me. Loved the "old-world-dark-wood-library" decor & the staff was so friendly ("Hi Marten!) Creative menu ideas-----homemade ravioli stuffed with Dutch shrimp, watercress and citrus dressing and zucchini stuffed with gouda cheese, walnuts & raisins. DELICIOUS! Highly recommended!
