“Good location. Ok hotel.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2012 via mobile

This was a nice hotel in a good location. Few minute walk to Dam Square.
Lovely reception area but our room was very small. Wouldn't really class the room as 4 star. It was nice and clean & there was a daily maid service & tea & coffee etc. The twin beds pushed together were very comfy & the bedding was good quality.
Overall, it's fine, but I do feel for the money you could find better with more space in the room. Was fine for our 2 night stay tho!

My husband and I stayed at this hotel during our honeymoon. When the travel agent booked us, she said she would mention that it was our honeymoon so that they would have that in mind. The hotel was lovely but when we got to our room, it was two twin beds pushed together. Not what we expected for our honeymoon! We asked at the desk for a different room. They were happy to switch us.

Each day we went out in the morning and returned mid afternoon for a rest. Inevitably, the maid was in our room cleaning when we would return, and made no effort to finish up to allow us into our room. We had to wait as long as half hour just to get in to lie down and have a break.

The straw that broke the camel's back was, the last night of our stay we made reservations in the fancy dining room for dinner. We wanted to splurge on our last night in the city. When we arrived at our reservation time, the dining hall was empty, and we were told by an employee that there were no reservations, the dining hall was reserved for a group. My husband pointed out that we had made the reservation the day before. Instead of an apology and any kind of gesture to make it up to us, we were directed to sit across the hall at the bar for our meal. We did not want our special honeymoon dinner in the bar. My husband was very upset that they took our reservation the day before, with no mention of the 'group' coming in, yet made no attempt to apologize and simply dropped the reservation.

We left the hotel in search of a place to have our last dinner. Not having had time to plan ahead, we wound up in a nice enough place but it wasn't quite what we'd planned for.

I think the staff needs to work on customer service. While the rooms were clean, tidy, etc., we sometimes felt second class and for our honeymoon, we wanted to feel somewhat special.

we stayed in the hotel for 7 nights in a superior twin room. the room was spacious, clean and comfortable , very good value for money (we paid about $100 a night). the hotel located in center just behind the royal palace (dam square), so there is no need to use the trams or buses, you just can walk and enjoy the beautiful streats and canals of the city. the stuff was very kind and helpful. we had such a wonderful time during our stay so i definitely recommend it and i'll be coming back!!!

I've been in Amsterdam 3 times in the last three years. so this what i can recommend as an experienced traveler:

1. location is the most important thing. while choosing a hotel, look for one in the area of dam square or the central station.

2. check the reviews on several websites before you book a hotel because you can get a very helpful information about the hotel and it's a life saver! (we almost booked a hotel that doesn't have an elevator even though it is a five stars hotel!!!).

3. check the rates at the hotel's website befoe you book sometimes it is less then booking.com or any other website (on one of my vacations to Amstedam it was 200 euro less) and then you will have more money for shoping :)

4. breakfast at the hotel is pretty expensive (15-19 euro) and it doesn't worth the money.

Dear Lital T,

Thank you very much for your feedback regarding your stay in our hotel and helpful tips for future travelers to Amsterdam.

We appreciate your comments about our central location. The main attractions are at walking distance from the hotel. The nicest way to enjoy Amsterdam is by foot or bike, so you can enjoy the canals and the small alleys in the city center. We will send your compliments to our team.

We are happy to read that you recommend our hotel and we look forward to welcome you again in our hotel!

I have a few mixed feelings on this hotel. Yes it is pretty grand inside the lobby and reception but once you get upstairs the corridors take the grandness away. Is it a 4*, in my opinion no, more likely a good 3*.
Our room was a decent size with very comfortable bed and great amenities. Tea/coffee making facilities, flat screen tv, telephone. The bathroom was a good size to with little extras that you would expect in a supposedly 4* i.e sewing kit, bath/shower gel etc. It was kept very clean as well by the maid.
The view from our room was not great, but we only used it as a base so only saw it first thing in the morning then later in the evening.
We was room only and did not pre-pay for breakfast as I think it was a total rip off. There are a couple of bars/cafes on the same street offering full breakfast for 8 euros and they were really nice.
Staff were friendly and helpfull.
Check-in is not until 2pm but if you arrive earlier you can leave your bags in a secure room at the hotel and go off to explore for a while first.
The location of this hotel is what really sells it. 2-5 mins walk from Dam Square, 10 min walk from Central Station, 5 min walk from main shopping area, 5-10 min walk from the canals.
Would I stay here again, yes I would, there is nothing really to complain about.
All hotels have some dodgy rooms, all hotels need updating at some point and all hotels have good and bad things to different people. At the end of the day you are in Amsterdam to see Amsterdam, not stay in your hotel 24/7.

Dear lostdreamz,

Thank you for your comments about your experience in our hotel.
We are happy to read that you have enjoyed your stay in Amsterdam. The hotel is built in three different monumental buildings with different sizes and floors. Characteristic for this merged buildings are the criss-crossed corridors through the building.
We appreciate your feedback about our hotel rooms and we will transfer your compliments to our team.
We hope we will be able to welcome you again in Hotel Die Port van Cleve!

While this hotel is situated in the heart of Amsterdam and close to everything, the location was the only real plus we found. Die Port van Cleve is billed as a 4-star hotel and, due to its history we were really looking forward to our stay, but a 3-star rating would be generous. The room was very small and just didn't feel clean. Amsterdam was our final destination after a three-week tour of Central Europe and this hotel didn't begin to compare to any of our other lodging. The staff seemed apathetic and would not help with our luggage, even when asked. They simply told us to wait for the one luggage cart they had. Suffice it to say, we were disappointed and would not recommend this hotel.

My Husband treated me to 3 days in Amsterdam for my birthday and booked this hotel. After reading the reviews I was slightly worried but needn't have been!! The hotel is very close to the square and the canals and although we arrived very early , about 9.30 , they made sure a room was ready for us. It was comfortable and clean and certainly more than adequate for our 3 day stay. The staff on reception were very welcoming and helpful even to the point of showing us where a bank was rather than exchanging our money as he said we would lose a lot in the exchange rate within the hotel!!! We paid extra for breakfast and I'm glad we did as it was a lovely buffet of hot food , sausages , eggs etc as well as fresh juice , friits , cheese , bread and jams. Again the staff in the restaurant were lovely and couldn't do enough for us. On the Saturday night we asked at reception if they knew a local good thai restaurant and they sent us to a wonderful place down by the canals about a 5 min walk. If you want a clean and friendly base to explore Amsterdam this is a great hotel.

Room Tip: Mt tip is more for Amsterdam than the hotel , make sure you book tickets for all sites online before...
