3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2012

Just got back from 3 night stay in this hotel. The hotel has the amenities of a 4star but as far as comfort goes only a 2star. We had room 229 which faced into a courtyard and other bedrooms and this meant that you had to have the curtains drawn on a night or provide a peep show. During the day we had net curtains which stopped people walking along the corridor looking into our room. The room had very little natural daylight. The room was lit by table lamps which were screwed down and couldn't therefore be moved around. The bathroom lighting again was poor - my husband found it difficult to shave and I found it difficult to apply make-up (we both wear glasses). The air conditioning was broken and the window only opened about 5 inches. All of this I could have put up with had the bed been comfortable but alas it wasn't and I had sleepless nights tossing and turning trying to get comfortable and even sleeping on a folded duvet did little to aid comfort and a stuffy and hot room added to the misery. Why do hotels put such hard mattrasses on beds?

On the plus side, our room was quiet, hotel staff helpful and friendly and it was nice to sit in the old bar and have a quiet drink.

Would we stay at this hotel again - No.

Room Tip: Don't have room 229

This hotel is in a great location in Central Amsterdam. When you go out of the hotel, the tram stop is literally outside the building. The Centraal Station is about a 10 minute walk or a 3 minute tram ride. I would suggest that you buy one of the "I Amsterdam" city card so you'll get a free canal cruise, unlimited tram and bus rides, and it even gives you free stuff or discounts at other shops and restaurants. The concierge is very helpful and honest. When I asked them if they exchange foreign currency, they suggested that we go to the market since they have better rates and doesn't charge fees. The rooms are small though but you're never in there anyway, At least I wasn't and if you are in your room the whole time and you're on vacation, then you've got serious issues! I would definitely stay here again!

Had a great time staying here. The location is great. Close enough to the train station and right next to the Dam and the city center. Next door is a shopping center with a store that sells tickets for bus rides and events for a cheaper rate than usuall. The room is nice and clean. A pretty nice place to stay in Amsterdam.

We arrived about 7 am hoping to leave our bags after a 24 hr trip and were given an early check in. What a relief! The 1st room smelled of cigarettes so we were given a new room right away. The room was clean and had a lovely Juliet balcony with views over the street.
Staff very helpful and friendly. The bar has great character although they were not offering meals while we were there.
Tram stop right at the door and 5 minutes walk to Central station and very close to the Dam and Kalver Straat. Supermarket virtually next door. Very handy.

Room Tip: Front rooms are noisy with the trams.

I stayed at this Hotel in April 2012 for a girly weekend. The Hotel I believe was the first Heineken brewery until 1870. The Hotel is very traditional and still has some of the original features. You cannot go wrong for the location it is steps away from Dam Square & central to most of Amsterdams attractions. Opposite the Hotel is an excellent Smoothie bar that does various smoothies, fresh juices, pancakes and waffles everything is delicious- a must try!!! Tea & Coffee making facilities are available in the rooms which is handy & the Hotel offers FREE WIFI.
Dont get a taxi from the Airport to the Hotel if you are on a budget as they where charging between 50-70 Euros which is a complete rip off!!! We chose to take the train from the Airport to Amsterdam Central station and then we walked to the Hotel which took about 15-20 mins this cost us approx 4 Euros per person! If you dont want to walk from the station to the Hotel you can get the metro link which stops just outside the Hotel. Amsterdam is a fascinating City, I would definately return and wouldnt hesitate about staying here again!
