“Perfectly fine for a central stay in Amsterdam”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2011

Me and a colleague have recently returned from a 1 night stay in this hotel - extending our stay after a work convention on the river cruise ships.
After reading some of the poor reviews - I must say I am really rather surprised as to how and why other guests have rated this hotel so badly. I can understand that this hotel is probably more suited to a 3* plus, rather than a 4* - however I believe the star rating is based on the location more than anything.
The hotel was very easy to find, just off Dam Square, the hotel reception were very efficient and helpful, we stayed in room 229 - not much of a view out the window however it was dark when we arrived anyway.
The room provided you with adequate facilites, functional and fairly modern bathroom, beds were comfy, free wifi for all guests in public areas and some main english channels on the television.
The breakfast was in the Brassiere restaurant on the reception floor - Perfectly adequate to fill you up until lunch, offering Toast, Scrambled Egg, Bacon, Sausage and continental hams, cheese etc;
The hotel were very helpful to store our luggage in a store room after we checked out so we didnt have to cart it around as we explored the city for the rest of the day.
I absolutely loved amsterdam, would certainly recommend this hotel and stay here again.

We stayed at Die Port van Cleve when my husband ran the 2011 Amsterdam marathon. It is a lovely old hotel with an efficient staff, a fine restaurant and a great bar. It is the site of the first Heineken brewery. Following the marathon, we enjoyed a wonderful celebration meal in the cozy bar. The hotel is centrally located within easy walking distance from the train/metro station and plenty of tram connections so it was easy enough to get to the Olympic Stadium. Amsterdam hotels are not cheap but we found this to be reasonable and well worth the $700 for 4 nights.

We stayed as a Young couple in Amsterdam! This hotel is fab location literally just off of dam square so right in middle of everything! Rooms were great, very clean and spacious! (we had a back room looking onto the road behind) the beds were out of this world and we are fussy with comfort but can not be faulted atall! Everything kept clean an receptionists always happy to help with whatever you need!! The only thing I will say let this hotel down is the breakfast to put it blunt it was a load of rubbish it is not worth the extortionate price they charge and not alot of selection! We booked breakfast as we arrived he made it sound like we would be paying about 15 euro for all 3 days when intact it worked out about 35 euro so if u do go for the breakfast check this when they make it sound cheap cos it more than likely ain't gonna be and the location u are in there are plenty of places to grab breakfast from. Other than that can not be faulted atall an would definitely stay here again!!! :)

VERY DISAPPOINTING. This hotel is in a prime location which is really it's only redeaming quality. I will say it was fairly clean. The rooms are TINY. The beds...well, there are not enough negative words to describe the lumpy lopsided sink-hole of a disastrous nights' sleep monstrously awful things they call beds. Upon my arrival, I was greeted with hair in the supposedly clean tub. I cannot possibly imagine how this hotel earned 4 stars.

Room Tip: Don't choose a room here.

Hotel location is very central, near Dam Square, hence reason for booking via hotel's own website, 6 months prior to visit, and paying at time of booking. I had wanted to use visit to say a good "thank you" to colleagues. On arrival at hotel, they told us that despite having a confirmed reservation that they were full, and had re-sold our rooms, however they had booked us in to their "sister" hotel (The Artemis) and would pay for taxis to get us there. The sister hotel was a 25 minute taxi ride from the centre of town (near airport). At the end of a long business day and being tired, we had no option but to agree to their terms. It ruined the trip for me, my colleagues were polite but obviously disappointed. We had dinner in town, but spent over 1.25 hours in taxis that night. My impressions are that this is the not the first time that the hotel have done this, to help them "sell" rooms in their less favourably located "sister" hotel. I had confirmed the rooms by e mail 2 weeks prior to travel, so they had all my details and could have contracted me before I turned up on the night, they had no excuse in my eyes, and let down their customers. Beware when booking and paying up front, you do not always get what you pay for or expect. If you can, stay somewhere else they do not deserve business if they treat customers this way.

positive:
nice location, quiet rooms if not facing the street, working wifi and internet, comfortable bed

negative:
amenities not adequate for a 4 star hotel, rooms smell bad and occasionaly there is a sewerage smell coming out of bathroom pipes. did not feel clean. there is no mini-bar in any room. despite not having breakfast the personnel was not flexible to cancel those charges.

First off...Great Location. Right at the Dam Square. So close to everything. Basically anything you might want to see is within walking distance. Breakfast in the dining room was very tasty. Front of the hotel is very classic Dutch architectureI and the lobby is nicely appointed. The staff is very helpfull and friendly. I had read other visitor's reviews so was not surprised at the small size of the room. Very small indeed. But then, we didn't spend all that much time in the room anyway. You could easily do much worse than Die Port van Cleve.
