“4 stars? Must be joking...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2011 via mobile

We are only here for 4 days and we don't mind that it's outside the city center since it's right on the tram line. However, when we first arrivef we were dying of thirst and tgere was noone to either welcome or serve us drinks. The double rooms are so tiny that it is impossible to move in it. There was nothing in the mini bar except water and the staff is so ride that they can knock on your door even if there is a do not disturb sign on it just because they suscept that someone is smoking on that floor. I've stayed in other 4 star hotels in different parts of the world but this was the worst in terms of staff, service, size and food. Stay in a tent in amsterdam but never go there!!!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2011

In finding rooms for my wife and I and another couple, one would think that the Super Bowl was in Amsterdam during the 3rd week of April. Anything suitable in the central area was sky high and I couldn't figure public transportation sufficient to chance it in most outlying areas (the Amsterdam metro website is the worst I have encountered). I finally compromised on a hotel with mixed reviews and was expecting a small hotel with basic accomodations on the outskirts of downtown whose only saving grace was that it was on the tram line to the central station. Of the 5 hotels I booked for a 2 1/2 weeks trip, I was most concerned about this one. I was pleasantly surprised to find a very nice boutique hotel with a helpful staff, a gourmet restataurant and bar, and a free internet in the business center (OK, an old, slow HP with no printer but, except for the other couple, I had no competition for using it). Our room was tiny and the shower was designed for someone 100 pounds lighter but it was clean and the beds comfortable. It even had drawers so we could take our clothes out of the suitcase. Our friends had a somewhat larger room which was on the street side and no complaints. The neighborhood was fairly upscale with several restaurants and markets within about 3 blocks. Christie's Auction house was across the street and even had a cocktail party the night before we left for home. We considered inviting ourselves but I was afraid that being on the 8th day in the same jeans would be a dead giveaway. The inbound tram stops about 2 blocks away in the direction of downtown and the outbound stops about a block past the hotel. Travel time to the station and back is about 15 minutes one way. We were able to transfer to an intersecting line the only times that we were coming or going anywhere except the station or Dam Square. We asked about the best way to get the 4 of us to the airport and were told by the staff that the standard fare was 35E for the taxi and it took about 25 minutes. They ordered a taxi suitable for 4 people with substantial luggage and he arrived just ahead of schedule with a van that would have handled 2 more people and we were at the airport in barely 15 minutes at 7 am on a weekday morning.

Room Tip: The rooms on the street side were larger.

I picked the hotel because it was walking distance to my business location and affordable for a 4 star. The room was miniscule and overheated; but clean. Tried opening the windows, but then it was just too loud to sleep. Had wireless access for free in the room. Woke up atleast 4 times during the night, other guests who came back in the morning hours talked in the hallway and you can hear every word.
Service in the restaurant was unfriendly.
Being a woman and travelling alone I was more comfortable sitting at the side of the room -but the table was for 3. I was asked to move to another table; with much more exposure. The restaurant did not fill (I came in at 9 pm) - and my preferred table remained empty. Food was ok. Had a chicken soup which was rather watery (alot of veggies, hardly any chicken). The salad with goat cheese was quite nice. Breakfast buffet is ok; but again unfriendly service (different people than the evening before).

A pleasant hotel set just outside the main city but with speedy access. The area is modern and seemingly prosperous, with easy access to the splendid Vondel Park. The service was food and the breakfast varied and filling

This is a very decent hotel, a little bit out of the way (but the tramway stop is just a stone's throw away). The only off-putting thing is the front staff--to say that they were unpleasant and unresponsive is an understatement. We were new in town, had only three days to visit a lot of the sights and needed some assistance. We asked a few questions and wondered we should continue, given the stone-cold expression on the woman at the reception (a blond)..I wondered if it's only her, but noticed it's everyone at the counter. I was quite put off by that. Also, it's annoying that breakfast was not included, but then that's becoming the norm even with larger hotels. In general, this is a recommendable hotel. but don't be too surprised by the attitude. Anyway, the Dutch are not super pleasant as it is.
