“Perfectly located...large and clean rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2009

The location in Dam square is perfect for first-time visitors, you're literally smack-dab in the middle of all the tourist attractions in Amsterdam. The hotel staff was friendly (and upgraded our room free-of-charge, as they knew we were on our honeymoon).

Our room was really clean and large (bigger than we had expected). And the breakfast that is included as part of your stay? AMAZING. It was (by far) the biggest spread I have ever seen in a hotel. Try the waffles, trust me.

The bed was really comfortable and the staff was really helpful.

One tip: Instead of paying a costly cab-fare back to the airport, ask the Concierge to reserve the hotel shuttle (Connexxion) for you, it's much cheaper (if you're not in the mood to deal with Central station). But note, it's a shuttle that stops at a few (sister) hotels before heading to the airport, so allow yourself plenty of time before your departing flight.

Have just returned from a two night stay at this hotel. Apart from slow check-in and out, I couldn't fault it at all. Had a lovely quiet room on the fourth floor at the back, overlooking the winter garden roof, I think. Everything in the room was perfect, temperature control, comfortable bed, windows that open, TV with BBC news channels, kettle & tea/coffee (I had to ask for milk to be brought to my room). The bathroom was nice & large, could do with updating but it was fine. Had a bath & separate shower/toilet. As a solo traveller, I felt v safe, could hear no noise at all from inside or outside and staying here was a pleasant experience. Front desk is usually busy but they were always pleasant and courteous. They cleared the minibar for me to use as a fridge, soon after I asked. Lobby and bar areas are very grand and quite expensive. I didnt eat at the hotel, the winter garden breakfast room looked beautiful. The location was fantastic, you are close to all the main shopping areas and tourist attractions. There are many less expensive hotels in Dam Square but I felt this was worth paying just a bit extra. I would stay here again on a future visit to Amsterdam.

The Kras is a superb hotel, and on previous trips I have always found it to be top drawer. However this time I was not quite so lucky, and found myself in a tiny, tobacco-smelling room at the back of the hotel - no Dam Square view this time. Given that the hotel gets a lot of custom from our company, this was a surprise.

The hotel is located on Dam Square, great location and just a 10 minute walk from Centraal Station. Staff are friendly and efficient, the downstairs areas are grand, and the bar is well-stocked.

In short, great hotel but be aware that not all rooms are as good as each other.

Having stayed in this hotel about ten years ago and had a wonderful time, I had been looking forward to a great weekend stay with my husband and another couple. We had recommended the hotel to them and in fact paid much more than we had intended, but hoped it would be worth doing.
It was apparent as soon as we arrived that things had changed. The number of people queuing to check-in/check-out was dreadful. Check-in was slow.
The room we were eventually allocated was on the fifth floor. It was supposed to be non-smoking, but it was immediately obvious that this room had been smoked in. We must have spent over an hour sorting out a room change. We were very disappointed by the tiny room our friends were allocated on the third floor.
The only saving thing about this hotel is it's location, which is perfect.
I was very disappointed to see how shabby and well used the hotel fittings appeared. The dining room chairs in The Winter Gaden had seen better days.
All in all, I would probably not choose to stay at this hotel again.

Have stayed at the Krasnopolsky a number of times now and its location, breadth of services, and efficient staff combine to make this a very comfortable and useful hotel. It values its reputation and history which reflects in the staff ethos and hotel decoration. You can experience some quirks and the efficiency of the front desk can suffer with queues forming and other people milling around in a thorough fare. The breakfast cost is eye watering, even for an extensive spread. A stay of six nights was favourably received resulting in an upgrade which was appreciated and there were no complaints about the room, good bed, decent sized business desk, quiet, and easy temperature control. During a period of security issues outside, normal activities inside were oblivious to those crowds such is the manner in which it operates.

We had a very enjoyable 4 night stay at the Hotel Krasnapolsky. We had booked through a travel agent who asked them to provide early check-in since we arrived at 8 am on a Sunday morning from the US. The front desk staff was very pleasant and efficient and offered to upgrade us to one of the apartments they own in the canal row houses behind the hotel at no charge so that we could check in immediately. The apartments are a bit difficult to get to from the hotel (down the hall, out into the alley, down the alley and around the corner and up the steps to a separate building with a keycard access and then down some very narrow stairs once you are inside) but they are very nicely appointed and staying in the apartment gave us a better feel of what it would be like to live in Amsterdam. We had a nice modern bedroom with a flat panel TV and desk, a living room/dining room with a couch, another flat screen TV, a full kitchen and French doors out to a shared garden courtyard and a very modern and well equipped bathroom. Other than the doors to the courtyard, our lower level room had large windows facing various alleys and walls so we kept the drapes closed most of the time. The building that the apartments are in is in the first block of the red light district. It added to the experience but women traveling alone might prefer to stay in the hotel itself since there was no direct access to the hotel without going outside.

Breakfast in the Winter Garden was included in our room rate and it was a great way to start the day. The food selection on the breakfast buffet was amazing and it is a stunning room. A definite plus. Not sure we would have paid for it had it not been included since it is fairly pricey. Did not try any of the other restaurants or bars. Lobby was large and pleasant with lots of places to sit but not very glamorous.

As mentioned by everyone else, the location is convenient, though not particularly picturesque due to lots of construction in the area and a sand volleyball tournament set up on the square. We took a day trip by train one day and it was nice to be able to walk to the central train station. We would also highly recommend the Hop On, Hop Off canal boats which can also be boarded at the train station. You get a 24 hour pass for 20 Euro and it is good on all three routes. A great way to see the city.

The only negatives were how expensive the internet access was and that no one came to make up our room the first 2 days we were there. When we called to complain we were told that housekeeping services the apartments only upon request since most guests stay there an extended time. It makes sense but it would have been nice to have been told that upfront. We asked for towels and a brief cleaning and they were there within 30 minutes and housekeeping also came the following day without being asked so they recovered nicely.
