I booked this room through Lastminute, and was rather surprised to find the rate that was quoted.

I didn't have a credit card with me, and foolishly didn't arrange to have a pre-auth sent through. No real problem - the Duty Manager could see I was unlikely to be much of a problem guest so a cash advance against room service was ok. More on that later.

My room at it's bargain rate turned out to be on the top floor and was not one of the recently renovated ones. This was ok with me, the room had everything I needed and more despite being a little bit on the dated side. The bathroom looked to have been fairly recently upgraded.

The bathroom contained a bit of a surprise to me, the wealth of toiletries which are supplied. Way above the usual and very very nice quality (the hotel sells them too, which I didn't take advantage of as I was travelling hand baggage only so couldn't have taken them home again). There was a little sponge, a comb, a hairbrush, a shaving kit and a toothbrushing kit as well as the usual shampoo, shower gel, soaps and body lotion. All in little wrappers! The comb was confiscated on the way back through Schipol (maybe they were scared I'd take it out of the wrapper and start demanding to comb the pilot's hair).

One down side was some dust - possibly due to renovations however it did make me think that the rooms don't get used enough or are not being worked on enough by the staff. There was dust on the coffee sachets - this being said, the cleaning staff were very much in evidence so maybe just one of those things. I was given extra coffee sachets cheerfully on request by the maid.

Everything otherwise was fine, though I did in the end use the minibar (I wouldn't have without having given a deposit). Possibly the most expensive thing going, 12€ for a diet coke, small can of Pringles and a Snickers. 12€!!

Checking out, the balance was returned without any worries and the City Tax was simply deducted.

Next time I might even not worry about upgrading to a "better" room. There were electronically remote controlled sunscreens outside the window, a little book of stories as light reading and even a packed of Smints!

  • Liked — The feeling that even in the cheapies, this was a 5 star experience
  • Disliked — The overspill from the red light district on a Saturday ... can't be helped really

I stayed here for a night in Sept 2008. Booked from priceline so we did not have any high expectation especially after reading the comment.
However, the hotel was by far the best hotel we have ever stayed in Europe. Our room was in the 4th floor, very big spacious room with large bath tub. Everything was perfect that we regret we did not stay longer. We moved to Hilton Amsterdam but Krasnapolsky is way better.

We stayed here on a weekend break. We had a fantastic large clean room in the Royal Wing. It was cleaned well each day. We found the staff very friendly and courteous.
We arrived early in the morning, too early for check -in, but we were able to leave our baggage at the hotel free of charge.
As mentioned in a previous review, the mini bar is sensitive. I moved something inorder to put a drink in it, it registered on reception that 2 items had been used. This was not a problem, the young receptionist immediately made out another bill minus the 2 items, explaining the above.
It's a great location close to shops, bars, trams, restaurants. We walked from Centraal Station to the hotel.
Our stay was enjoyable and comfortable, and we would stay here again.

I've stayed here before, but not for at least 8 years. The hotel has become drab, run-down, with staff who seem a bit pretentious and a concierge who was impatient and unhelpful.

When you enter the hotel, the lobby is just sad -- not a lot of furniture, rather bare bones, and nothing welcoming or cheerful. Elevators in different areas of the hotel, some in rather unusual locations (and not pretty).

The room I had was large with a good desk and working area. The beds were mediocre -- mattresses seem worn, but comforters are lovely. I had good closet space and nice furniture. Lighting in room could be better. Some things seemed to be updated in the room, but others, such as the torn wall paper, were not. The bathroom was old, with mint green tile from another era. The toilet in the bathroom was in its own "stall" -- rather strange, but practical if you're sharing with someone you don't know well. Water pressure was terrible and the temperature control was non-existent so it was easy to scald yourself when taking a shower -- putting the water even on lukewarm could vary to scalding without warning. The handheld shower was attached to the hose strangely so that it is inevitable that the hose hits you or rests on you as you hold the showerhead.

Cleaning of rooms is poor for this level hotel (hair on bathroom floor after cleaning, cup used for tea not cleaned). Amenities are many in addition to the standard shampoo and gel -- they add toothbrush, razor, bath sponge, comb -- but the quality is fair. The very small soaps made me go out to buy a decent bar of soap that doesn't disappear so quickly (especially if you want to wash out any clothes).

Wireless internet in rooms is good but expensive at 22Euro (about $29) for 1 day. Small safe in room. Minibar is bizarre -- if you move anything in it, you are charged for the item. You have to inform the desk if you have moved any items so that they do not charge you if you didn't use the item.

Great location! Could not be more central - right on the central square (Dam). You can walk to almost everything.

For the money, I'd rather go elsewhere next time. This was the grande dame of hotels in Amsterdam -- I'm afraid her glory days are long behind her. I am sure you can do better.

Overall, I liked the hotel for its central location (we walked almost everywhere), modern rooms, and clean bathrooms. It is right in Dam Square and a quick walk to the train station. We stayed in a side building and the rooms were quiet. Check in and out was easy and efficient. It is also right next to a yummy fries stand!!

  • Liked — clean, good-sized, modern bathroom
  • Disliked — concierge not that helpful, but i had my guidebook
