Just returned from a trip to Amsterdam. It was a special occasion, so we wanted to have nice accommodations for the 3 days we stayed there. We chose Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky, and it proved to be an excellent choice. It is a bit pricey. When I shopped around, the prices were generally in the $350-450 range; however, I found an advance purchase at Travelocity at $250/night. It turned out to be a great bargain for this hotel, and it was worth every penny. First, the hotel's location can't be beat - it's right on the Dam Square, in the center of everything. Second, the room was huge compared to other European hotels we stayed at. Some reviewers said the rooms were a bit shabby, but our room was pretty clean and nice. Third, the amenities are excellent. You get a generous package of the usual bathroom stuff, and a choice of 4 kinds of pillows. Plus, if you need anything else, the staff is very attentive. For example, I could not find my electric adapter to charge my phone. One call to the front desk, and in 5 minutes I had a proper adapter. The concierge is very attentive and helpful. Several very nice dining establishments on the premises, including a picturesque winter garden. They are not cheap, though.

A couple drawbacks. The shower system is very weird, and the shower hose gets in the way. Plus the water temperature was fluctuating which was annoying. Also, the bathroom itself looked a little dated, with green tiles straight from the 70s. Also, we had a problem with our AC, and the room was too warm (until we decided to open the windows). It was the weekend night, so the maintenance staff has already gone home. But these negatives did not detract from the overall very pleasant experience. If we are ever in Amsterdam again, Krasnapolsky would still be our first choice.

  • Liked — Great location, excellent service, large room, amenities
  • Disliked — Weird shower, water temperature fluctuation, weak AC

Not bad. I wasn't there long. Pretty much just enough to sleep. Room was decent. I wouldn't say 5 start but probably more 4-ish.

Staff was helpful and friendly. Location was pretty good and central. About 10 minutes walk to Amsterdam Centraal. 5 minutes to RLD. Right off the Dam plaza.

Ate locally in the neighborhood (Argentinian steakhouse) and took off for Schiphol early the next day from Centraal.

Used Priceline and would PL there again but it's overpriced at regular rates IMO

stayed one night here was quite dissapointed
first when i checked in was given key and directions to room verbally and written on key holder unfortunately the directions were to the wrong lif and the other end of the hotel
first room we were given had a quite nasty smell of sewage
after ringing reception was offered an alternative room which was better but had a smell off smoke even though was a non smoking room room was large and clean but i think the hotel needs rennovation as there is a musty smell in most parts of the hotel
bathroom had a municipal feel to it
to sum up this hotel has agreat location but it seems past its sale by date was not worth the discounted rate i got 100 gbp

We stayed in the hotel in mid June.

I had emailed in advance to request an early check in and when no non-smoking standard rooms were available early we decided to upgrade to the royal wing. This was 45 euro per night and the room was very nice. I would say certainly good 4 star standard. We were on the second floor and had no trouble with noise from the street below. We also had a late flight home on the Sunday so being able to check out at 5 was great. The desk staff were helpful and friendly

The hotel is very well located and a 5-10 minute walk from central station. Our only disappointment was we decided to go to the sunday brunch in the winter garden and it was over when we arrived- even though the info in our room said it was from 1-3pm (so you might want to check if you want to do the same.)

Mini-bar was well stocked - no price list in sight though! We ordered a pizza from room service which was very nice.

Grand Old Glamour

This is an old-school, old-world hotel with slightly fading glamour, but great location, service, and amenities nontheless.

We got an amazing price for this place, given the location (right on the square) and the room (HUGE, with a king bed the size of a trampoline, a bathtub big enough for two, and a seperate marble shower stall that could fit four comfortably).

The room was decorated in rich burgundies and golds, very old-school, very classic. The bathroom was enormous even for US standards (not to mention European standards), and made us feel like we had a mini-spa in our room.

Room service is available 24 hours a day. Staff is very polite and gracious. Check-in and check-out took about 10 minutes, which was slighly frustrating. They know they have a large hotel with many people coming and going, they should staff the desk with more individuals at peak times.

This seemed like a hotel for the older, gentried set. We saw many people coming in for the night right around the time we were leaving.

Unlike with many European hotels, breakfast was *not* included with our room. (At the room rate we got, I couldn't blame them.) An enormous buffet is available, for a price.
