“It's getting there...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

After 20+ years of decline, NH has decided to invest in the property rather than continuing to live off the name and location. They're getting there. My room was recently renovated and in very good shape. But it had just a few Dutch TV channels. No BBC or other English language TV, which is standard for even 2-star hotels in Amsterdam. So if you like to keep up with news and don't understand Dutch, you should either book elsewhere or check if they've decided to pay for basis cable. The A/C in my room worked well, but when I checked-in there was someone complaining at the desk that the A/C in his room was out. Assume any stays in the next 6-12 months are a roll of the dice. If you get a good price and are willing to gamble, you might get a very good room in the center of Amsterdam. Or you might get a run down room with no TV or climate control.

Room Tip: Room on The Dam have views and more noise. Some rooms have been recently renovated.

We stayed at the hotel end of July 2013 for the fifth time. It did not disappoint, old fashioned luxury, wonderful staff and breakfasts to die for!! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a little old fashioned luxury!

Hotel is situated in the best spot, right downtown, within walking distance to Van Gogh museum, red light district, Anne Frank house etc. The hotel is elegant, with a sort of regal element. Rooms are #1

Stayed a week and had an opportunity to familiarize myself with the hotel. Good location, good breakfast and Sunday Brunch in the Winter Garden (large glass covered room) nice quiet area to sit in the Summer Garden (outdoor area behind the fitness room) good drinks in the Golden Palm Bar.

Most helpful tip I can share is that this hotel has five different types of rooms.
It's very important to let them know what your needs are when making a reservation so that you can get the type of room that suits your needs.

Staff knowledge is variable, you may need to ask more than one person the same question to get accurate basic information.

Another helpful tip I can share is to make your Taxi reservations through the hotel because they offer a fixed rate.

Great hotel in a great spot in Amsterdam.

Staff so friendly - rooms slightly dated but lovely bathroom, and comfy beds.

Will be returning in November with a few more friends.

Breakfast was delicious but pricey - the architecture of the dining rooms were stunning.

The restaurants near the hotel were very nice - but London prices (we expected that)

Be aware of the cyclist and trams! they are fast!

Room Tip: If you want a smoking room - just ask and you will be moved

We stayed for one night on a mini break to Amsterdam. This was our first visit to the city and the location was great. The hotel was lovely, clean, large rooms and surprisingly quiet. I would definitely recommend this hotel. We didn't include breakfast as there was plenty of restaurants serving breakfast on the door step, and a lot cheaper!

Like many European hotels the hotel is quite beautiful on the outside as well as within its breathtaking Winter Garden however the rooms are small and not very spacious. They are more than adequate for resting in quiet after long days of touring Amsterdam. The hotel is located right in the heart of the city, a short walk to all attractions and perfectly near public transportation (800 meters from Central Station) . The hotel's service was great and I would certainly recommend this for a comfortable stay in the heart of Amsterdam.
