“A Hotel close to all attractions. But don't feel 5 star”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

This Hotel is located very close to central station ( 10 mins by walk ) and close to many other tourist attractions including the famous red light area of Amsterdam. Site seeing buses and river cruises depart from central which is very close. Hotel is surrounded by many eating joints. During yester years this might have been a 5 star hotel . But the current look of the rooms and the Hotel ambience no way give the feeling of a five star property. They still charge five star rates. I paid Euro 230 plus per night for a single occupancy. The only exception could be the big garden restaurant where breakfast is served . Wireless internet is free ( Very slow connection)

Room Tip: Don't take rooms facing the streets as they can be very noisy till late night

Having read numerous reviews of which some were rather negative, we can, without a doubt, not say anything other than "perfect in every way". Stayed for 8 nights and enjoyed every second. The room was huge and even though it was on the first floor, right on Dam square, we cannot complain about any noise - in fact, the slight hum of the airconditioning unit, the extra thick windows and the heavy, dark curtains, made it very difficult to wake up before 11am! The staff were extremely efficient and friendly and the concierge had answers and plans for ANY request. I cannot help but think that complaints stem from either "inexperienced" travellers or people who simply just look for any excuse to complain. You surely cannot expect more than what we got - good value for money (location, location, location!), efficiency even when extremely busy, comfort, stately (history), fantastic room service menu and smiles all around. If you ask for an extra tea-bag late at night, you get 5, within 2 minutes. And we were not charged an additional deposit - probably because we paid upfront for an extended stay.

Room Tip: Slightly more expensive but the rooms with a view over Dam Square are worth it!

Very sad. Clearly previously a grand five star now very definitely a three star. The message at check in is not welcome and we are glad to see you but we don't trust you and a charging you a deposit of €50'a night. Our room in the "new wing" was clean and refurbished but small, looking out over drab rooves and you could hear absolutely everything from the bathroom in the bedroom. The smell of drains is still there, the free wifi is, indeed, very slow indeed. Breakfast would be great if it were included and/or you have time to enjoy it but extremely expensive if all you want is cup of hot water and a bowl of muesli. Why not have a differentiated price for a continental rather than a full breakfast? We asked for the bill to be split one night/two nights at check out. The split needed to be right since some of it was on.business credit card and some a personal one. The clerk got the split wrong, allocated the payments without checking with us first and then blamed us for having got it wrong and said he couldn't change The only redeeming feature is the location but there must be plenty of other much better places. If you want five stars find a real five star, if you want three stars find a real three star.

Room Tip: Not sure the refurbished rooms a are small and the older, larger ones sound shabby.

I had great expectations of this once iconic Hotel. Its history itself is interesting. This used to be one of the best Hotels in town. Its location is extremely good and the wintergarden where breakfast is served is reminiscent of its former elegance but now the breakfast is mass produced and tasteless . The rooms are quite ordinary - ours was a suite . The access between buildings needlessly complicated. The concierge most unhelpful and not forthcoming . For example canal cruise options they handed us a brochure and said go book it yourself . The Reception not friendly and guest oriented. I even tried to become a member both through the reception and the Concierge of the NH Hotel chain . This wasnt happening !

Location cannot be faulted, middle of town and about a 10 minute walk from the main station. Got the hotel on special so the price was decent but wouldn't be paying full price. Nice room and wifi. Girlfriend was happy with the fact they had a pillow menu so she could get a firm pillow!

Shabby rooms, not renovated for decades, elevator 4 has a filthy carpet and scratched doors, inexperienced staff (perhaps trainees?) and too expensive for what they have to offer.

The so called "free wi-fi" is misleading advertising as what you get is so slow that many pages time out before they load (128 Kbps) but, of course for "only" 10 Euro a day you can upgrade to something usable but not brilliant. Breakfast at 29.50 Euro per person is not worth having (the omelet station was unmanned most of the time and the cook, when called, came reluctantly. The first couple of days there were copies of the Wall Street Journal which were subsequently replaced by the China Daily - not my first choice of newspaper. Had hassle with several other things. Not likely to return. (By the way, their idea of an upgrade is offering you a smaller but renovated room). Not impressed and certainly poor value.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the shabby old rooms - unfortunately renovated rooms are more expensive (45 euro a...

Great location, very central! The hotel is very close to tram lines and of course, it is right next to Dam Square, the Palace, and the Bijenkorf. Hop on a tram and you can explore Amsterdam easily! I LOVED the ambience of this hotel and its history. The Winter Garden was a beautiful space and we enjoyed the breakfast there every morning. We were very impressed with the staff, very friendly and helpful. The front desk handled check-in and check-out with no hassles. Later on they were helpful to me when I needed help with buying a ticket for the tram and metro. Kudos to the Food and Beverage staff, Maurits, Yvonne, and Wirawan. Our room was wheelchair accessible. Even though our room did not have a view, it was very spacious and well appointed. It was also very quiet which is very important to me!
