“Decent Hotel, Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2012

This was our first stay in Amsterdam and we chose this hotel due to its location in Dam square. We did not plan in advance how we would get from the airport to the hotel so we just took a taxi not aware of the time it would take or the cost. It was about a 20 min drive from the airport and was 40 euros. Probably could have been cheaper but we were just eager to get there. The hotel really is in the center of the city. The lobby was okay. Service was slow at check in as the receptionist checking us in was constantly interrupting us to answer the phone as other workers were standing by. The elevators were tucked far away from the reception in an area that looked nothing like the lobby. It was near conference rooms and had a completely different feel. The room itself was very clean and modern. We had a great view. The bed was not very comfortable and the 2 pillows were extremely flat. The shower/tub can be dangerous. I fell getting out of the tub because it is very deep and there are no rugs on the floor or anything to hold on to. It was easy access to the tram system and there are a lot of things within walking distance. I couldn't imagine a better location. I will probably stay at this hotel again when I return because of its location.

I stayed at the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky in August 2011 as one of the stops on our honeymoon. This was by far our favorite hotel in the 5 countries that we visited. The location is excellent, a 10 minute walk from the station and has all of the shops, food, red light district etc. all in walking distance. The bed was extremely comfortable (which I have found to be a problem in many hotels) and the staff was the most pleasant, nice people I have ever come across. My wife and I will be back in Amsterdam in February and we will once again be staying at this hotel without hesitation.

This hotel is a little bit pricey for what you get - not the best value. Overall, it's a good hotel, but it's not a 5 star.

The staff is terrific. They speak perfect English, they are so nice, and they are great about giving directions and helping you find things. The lobby is spacious and gorgeous. The location can't be beat. It's easy to find and right in the center of things. There's a tram stop across the plaza, and you can walk to many attractions from the hotel, including the Anne Frank House, the Red Light District, Old Church, many coffee shops, and de Poizen boot.

The room was spacious and the bed was comfortable. There is a restaurant there, but it's pretty pricey so we didn't partake.

The bathroom had some big problems though. When we first checked in, our non-smoking room was fine, but the bathroom absolutely reeked of cigarette smoke. We called down and they sent someone up with air freshener and that did the trick. I found it rather annoying that the cleaning staff didn't notice and do something about that when they cleaned it. The other huge problem with the bathroom was that the shower water temperature would never stay where you put it. First of all, please know that this hotel LOVES its hot water. The hot water was scalding, so not much was needed. However, the shower continually vacillated between pleasantly warm, scalding hot, and freezing cold. With no pattern to anticipate those very unpleasant changes. Needless to say, we took extremely fast showers! Another problem we experienced is that the hallways always smelled like poop. I don't know why, but you were hit with it every time we exited our room.

My last complaint is that the rooms had no free wi-fi, and the price for it was exorbitant. I've stayed in enough hotels that provide wi-fi in the rooms to know it's not that big a deal anymore, so a purportedly 5 star place really should provide that with no problem.

Even with the problems mentioned, I would probably stay here again. The location is that good.

Booked to be right at the heart of the Dam Square for New Year 2012 Celebrations - Nice to have somewhere to retreat to from the fireworks! ;-)
Nice Hotel, no issues during stay of note. Would stay again. TV kept freezing (hotel management system) - but sorted itself out after 1st night. Our room was pretty good having been renovated in last 12 months? but was in a separate building where you had to leave the hotel and cross a pedestrian street/cut through. This was not a problem for us, but feels slightly detached and wonder if all hotel services have to travel al fresco as well?
Taxi to airport 45eu (fixed) which is booked via hotel. Good price considering average of 60 previously....

Room Tip: Rooms in the 'Royal Wing' (separate building) are newer and have been refurbished recently...

i stayed here for two days on a trip, when i arrived i was happy with the location and the look of the hotel, however the staff was not helpfull and quite rude to us, the room was nice but when we walked in we notice a shower cap covering the smoke alarm and dident think much of it, the next day we asked for the rrom to be cleaned and returned later to find we couldent enter our room ( card wouldent work ) goes to the desk to ask why and they called security ( big angry guy ) who then says leave the hotel because of the shower cap which we dident put there, after a very long arguement he returned and sayes the manager will let you off once but were watching you. ( the big problem with it was it was new year and everywhere was booked ) in general everyone we spoke to was rude
