With a 5 star rating I was expecting a great experience. The location is wonderful and the staff were friendly but the hotel is a dump. The carpets are worn, paint is obviously old, walls and doors scratched, etc, etc. For 250 euros I got a room that dated to 1950 in its decor and was 5 x 10 feet in size! The breakfast buffet was too expensive for what was offered, costing 25 euros. I would not stay there again.

After reading some of the reviews, I was concerned about staying at this hotel. This was my third trip to Amsterdam, so I knew the hotel's location was great, but the GH Krasnapolsky sounded somewhat shabby. My friends and I booked through Gate 1, and I must say we had an excellent experience. My room was quite large (I paid an additional amount to have a "superior" standard room) and very comfortable, with windows that overlooked the Dam Square. The bathroom was great, with double sinks, a tub and a separate walk-in shower. The toiletries were very nice and refilled every day. Our breakfast was included, and there was a huge variety and the food was good. The coffee, however, was not up to Amsterdam's usual standard. My friends' standard room was also very nice. I don't know if we were just lucky to get such good rooms, but I would certainly recommend this hotel.

Just returned from a stay at the Hotel Krasnapolsky to celebrate our friends 25th wedding anniversary. Picked the hotel because it was central and it was true to its word - came out of train station and walked straight for about 10 minutes and you are there. Was worried about check in as had read so many bad reviews about this - but checked in about 3pm and with no hassle or queues. We had booked with last minute.com and paid extra to get the best room available - wouldn't waste money again doing this as got standard room with no view in the conference end of hotel - think we would somehow have got this room no matter what. Room nothing fancy - but clean. Didn't spend too much time in it as so much to see and do in Amsterdam. Only complaint we had was the smell when you exited elevator 5 - 2nd floor - the smell in the corridor was horrendous. Luckily smell didn't filter in to our room - and only seemed to be on floor 2. Breakfast dining room looked magnificent - but the price was just too over the top. All in all we really enjoyed our stay for the 3 days and definitely will return to Amsterdam - but probably stay at another hotel in and around the area of the Krasnapolsky now that we know the area and other hotels around it - as it was really central and easy to get around.

  • Liked — its central location
  • Disliked — the smell on the 2nd floor of elevator 5

This was our first trip to Amstedam and I really wanted a decent hotel for our 8 night stay. Read all of the reviews and was a little nervous since the reviews were either really good or really bad depending on the type of room you received so I just gritted my teeth and hoped for the best.

Had read numerous reports about a busy front desk and not enough help. Yes, it was busy when we checked in on a Friday afternoon but we stood in line patiently as others jumped in front of us. I was a little tired from the flight and annoyed but really it only was about a 15 minute wait until our turn to check in. The people at the front desk were great. They gave us a message right away that we had waiting for us from a friend who lives there and even dialed his number for us right at the front desk so we could call right away.

Our room was located in the Royal Wing and we loved it. Very spacious, new furniture, queen size bed, lots of closet space and a HUGE bathroom. We did have to go through a corridor outside using our keycard to get to our room but that didn't bother us. What did bother us was that sometimes it took a few swipes of the keycard to get into our wing. We noticed others having the same problem. No big deal though - we were going to get a new keycard but it seemed to be working better by the end of the week. They also gave us a coupon for 2 free welcome drinks in the bar. The bar also had great service and served a few light bites around happy hour.

Included in our hotel package rate was the daily buffet breakfast. I'm not sure how much this costs normally but it was a great buffet. It was held in a beautiful room and had anything and everything you could want for breakfast for both American and European tastes. Also included was unlimited champagne that you just poured yourself - think we had champagne and/or mimosas at every breakfast.

We used the concierge once to make a restaurant reservation for us. Turned out that the place we wanted to go to was closed for their vacation so he recommended a different one. It was a great recommendation (we told him what kind of place we were looking for ) - turned out to be our favorite restaurant for the entire trip!

Right around the corner about a block away from the hotel is a little champagne/wine bar called Bubbles and Wine. This place had our names written all over it and we were frequent customers during our stay. Great service, great drinks, great appetizers!

The location of our hotel was perfect. Had to take the train on a couple of days and it was an easy walk to the train station. Also an easy walk to almost anywhere!

All in all, we were very pleased with our hotel choice and with Amsterdam. We saw alot of the city and also ventured out to other towns as well. The people we met during our stay were wonderful - very friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back!

The only redeeming feature of this so-called "5 star" hotel is the location - Dam Square - and even that in the middle of summer can be overcrowded and noisy. We arrived at 6.15 in the morning after a long flight from Ecuador, and had to wait 10 minutes until someone answered the night porter bell - not something one would expect from a 5 star hotel. Check in was fine . The room was real disappointment. Shabby , run down, and in need of a complete refurbishment. The public areas are those you would expect from a 2-3 star hotel - all again in need of a major updating. - particularly the carpets. Will never stay there again.
