This was our first trip to Amstedam and I really wanted a decent hotel for our 8 night stay. Read all of the reviews and was a little nervous since the reviews were either really good or really bad depending on the type of room you received so I just gritted my teeth and hoped for the best.
Had read numerous reports about a busy front desk and not enough help. Yes, it was busy when we checked in on a Friday afternoon but we stood in line patiently as others jumped in front of us. I was a little tired from the flight and annoyed but really it only was about a 15 minute wait until our turn to check in. The people at the front desk were great. They gave us a message right away that we had waiting for us from a friend who lives there and even dialed his number for us right at the front desk so we could call right away.
Our room was located in the Royal Wing and we loved it. Very spacious, new furniture, queen size bed, lots of closet space and a HUGE bathroom. We did have to go through a corridor outside using our keycard to get to our room but that didn't bother us. What did bother us was that sometimes it took a few swipes of the keycard to get into our wing. We noticed others having the same problem. No big deal though - we were going to get a new keycard but it seemed to be working better by the end of the week. They also gave us a coupon for 2 free welcome drinks in the bar. The bar also had great service and served a few light bites around happy hour.
Included in our hotel package rate was the daily buffet breakfast. I'm not sure how much this costs normally but it was a great buffet. It was held in a beautiful room and had anything and everything you could want for breakfast for both American and European tastes. Also included was unlimited champagne that you just poured yourself - think we had champagne and/or mimosas at every breakfast.
We used the concierge once to make a restaurant reservation for us. Turned out that the place we wanted to go to was closed for their vacation so he recommended a different one. It was a great recommendation (we told him what kind of place we were looking for ) - turned out to be our favorite restaurant for the entire trip!
Right around the corner about a block away from the hotel is a little champagne/wine bar called Bubbles and Wine. This place had our names written all over it and we were frequent customers during our stay. Great service, great drinks, great appetizers!
The location of our hotel was perfect. Had to take the train on a couple of days and it was an easy walk to the train station. Also an easy walk to almost anywhere!
All in all, we were very pleased with our hotel choice and with Amsterdam. We saw alot of the city and also ventured out to other towns as well. The people we met during our stay were wonderful - very friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back!
