“An acceptable stay but not a 4 star hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013

This hotel is definitely not a 4 star hotel, despite what it may claim. It lacks the basic amenities you would expect from a 4 star. Having stayed in many hotel rooms in Europe, I would equate this to a 2.5 star or 3 star hotel.

That being said, the location of this hotel is great. Easy walking distance to just about everything in the area and close proximity to the tram stop with no connections needed to get to Central Station.

The room was small but that is expected. However, we couldn't even open the window fully because it opened into the room and the furniture got in the way.

The furniture was a bit dated and actually everything about the room felt dated. This property is in severe need of an update.

Overall, if you don't care much about cosmetic things or hotel amenities then this hotel will be fine for you.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the canal.

We have stayed in the hotel just for a weekend, but we like it very much because of the perfect location, nice breakfasts with a view over canal and overall historical feeling.

The location you cannot get better, as it is right in the center, but still it is in the quite location. Every attraction is in the walking distance, the only transport you can choose to use (but dont have to, just for fun) is a canal boat and/or bike.

The breakfast was rich and nice (hot and cold). Breakfast room is with a view over a canal, that makes the breakfast time very special.

The room was not big, but it was standard and fine for 2 nights stay. The only thing is the beds were unusually soft, so we were drowning in those beds. The rest in the room was standard for 4* hotel with typical for NH chain nice amenities in the bathroom.

The useful thing the hotel got the shuttle transfer to airport, which we used. Taxi costs about 45 euros, shuttle a bit less then 20 euros per person and the train is the cheapest, but you need to get to the central station.

Hotel Doelen has nice rooms with lovely views over the canal is centrally located and easy walking distance to any of the major attractions. Staff are helpful and friendly. Breakfast at 17euos is overpriced for what is on offer but is the standard price for central Amsterdam - probably best to cut breakfast and get something outside - the coffee is still free in the morning. Make sure you ask for a front room or the main attraction - the view will be lost to you. They have some ace single rooms with small balcony on the 5th floor

Although not the cheapest hotel in Amsterdam, it is very scenic, full of character and supremely comfortable. I did not eat there so cannot comment, but 5 mins from red light area, 5 mins from Dam square and 10 mins walk from central Station, it really is well positioned.

In terms of service they are very good, offering a towel when I arrived as I was soaked like a drowned rat! A simple but nice touch.

I plan to stay here again when I take my girlfriend in Q1 2014.

Great location. Clean. Decent size rooms. Friendly staff. Booked through a 3rd party website that you dont know where your staying untill you paid... resulting in a good price for the hotel we got so can not complain.

This is not a 4 star hotel by any means. The hotel exterior reminds us of the rich history of the hotel and the breakfast area is quite nice. But all in all the hotel has seen better days. There are signs of wear and tear just about everywhere. My room was a standard double and it was guite worn and by no means fitting the concept of a 4 star hotel. The TV was small and ancient. The drain plug in the bath tub was broken but mended the following day without having to contact the reception desk. They advertise free WI-FI but it is a very slow connection indeed with about 100 mb transfere rate and bandwidth of 256 Mbit/s. There is of course the possibility to upgrade the conection for a price of 6.60 €. The location of the hotel is great with most of the sights within walking distance. The breakfast was good with a wide array of choices.
