“excelent location, but very old hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2011

I've been to this hotel during the Queen's day this year. It has a great location, very close to the Dam, the Flower market and the red lights district. The staff was pretty nice and helpful, and the lobby looked pretty good.
However, the rooms are very small and old, with tiny beds and bathroom. I can't say that the beds weren't comfortable, but they were so small that i almost fell few times. The TV in the room was probably older than me, same as the furniture(but that's no problem). The elevator had some big issues, which weren't resolved until i left.
The internet is 10Eur/day, which is a bit expensive on a longer stay.

The breakfast was around 20 Eur, so i preferred to eat in the city.

At nights, it's pretty noisy from the outside, so if you have sleep problems, i really do not recommend this hotel.

If you don't care much about the room sizes and furniture, it's a decent hotel.

Room Tip: all the rooms are the same

Tip: On one side of the hotel entrance there is a coffee place with free wifi, and on the other side there is Cafe de Jaren with possibly Amsterdam's nicest terrace at the canal side. Saw this time in Amsterdam that NH seem to have bought up almost every second hotel in the center. Also this one. Clearly the reason we got such a good deal on the room is that the hotel is - eagerly - awaiting renovation. Squeeaky floors and worn out carpets. But what the heck. You're right in the middle of all the fun.

And staff is very helpful.

Room Tip: Go as high as you can!

Room 416 is to kill for - large and nicely appointed with amazing views down a canal. The staff was extremely attentive and took great care of us including ignoring our feeble attempts to pronounce Dutch place and restaurant names and figuring out what we really wanted. They helped us with cabs, restaurant reservations and finding our way around - it was an extremely pleasant experience and stay.

And the hotel is no more than a 15 minute walk from any major downtown attraction - museums, churches, great restaurants, attractions.

We chose this hotel based on reviews, price and location. To be honest it isn't "the hotel from hell" but it wasn't without its faults.

First the good parts! The staff were very friendly and helpful. The location is ideal for walking to the main bar areas of Amsterdam, and for jumping on a tram for the further place afield. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable.

Now the not so good. The room we first had was at the front of the hotel, and was on the 3rd floor (room 312). This was a large room and I think they called it a business suite. Had 2 beds put together to make a kingsize - comfy bed. The location unfortunately meant that when trying to sleep you would be interrupted by bikes, cars, people etc going past the cut through road at the front of the hotel.

We could also hear the people walking above us on the 4th floor, and outside. It's an old hotel so I suppose this comes with the territory. To top it all, the hotel was robbed in the early hours of the Saturday morning - 2 men follwed someone in, and while the night watchman was on the 4th floor they jumped the reception. The first we heard was when the police were breaking down the nightdoor! It was the 2nd time this happened too, we were later informed.

After asking the frontdesk to move rooms to the rear of the hotel, next to the canal, they did so without fuss so if you do stay I would recommend asking for a canalside room - much quiter.

Couple more minor things; really slow lift, I mean really slow, and the showers were weak.

Classy reception area sets the bar a bit high, as the rooms were pretty basic and plain but everything was clean and in good working order. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Slowest elevator I have ever seen, and free wifi would have been nice, considering the price tag.

We have stayed in the Doelen a couple of times in the past. The last time was about 10 years ago. We decided to stay there again and were looking forward to the hotel that we remembered.
Sadly, it has gone downhill somewhat since out last visit. The staff were still very efficient and friendly, and the location is excellent.
But I think the hotel needs work to bring it back into the 4 star caregory.
The room was very small... Nowhere to put you things other than on the floor. The bathroom was shabby and the TV didn't work properly. The main problem was the noise. When we first went into the room I thought the window had been left open. However, it was just the tired, worn out double glazing. It was so noisy at night we had to phone down for earplugs!
We could also hear every word of the people in the next room.
Very poor when compared to similar 4 star hotels in Amsterdam. We won't stay at the Doelen again.

Just like many reviewers are saying, this hotel really needs refurbishment. Also there is no proper ventilation/air-cond system, sothat from the very first moment you enter this hotel you get the sensation of a smelly place. Rooms are small here. I think all other NH hotels in Amsterdam are much better (Carlton, Schiller, etc.). In any case I think NH should improve training and salary for their Hotel Staff: they are somehow unprofessional and unhappy.
