4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2014

everywhere within easy walking distance, the 197 bus from the airport goes straight to the hotel 2 mins walk! very comfortable rooms with pure cotton sheets! Breakfast was good and teh staff were friendly I would thoroughly recommend this hotel

Room Tip: I was given the penthouse! not sure why! but would be fun to have a view of the canal!

I'm bewildered that this hotel has received such positive reviews.

I checked out a few days ago and the Dikker & Thijs Fenice after staying two nights. Amsterdam was the last stop on a 10-day trip throughout Europe with my boyfriend. (Disclaimer- We are both seasoned travelers, having stayed at hundreds of properties from Bangkok to Cape Town. We are both easy-going and do not tolerate guests who are rude to hotel staff, restaurant staff, etc.) Upon our checking in we were received by a very gruff and standoffish woman behind the front desk, who gave us no orientation or map of the area (come on, this is Hotel 101), much less a friendly attitude. After having to wait for our room to be cleaned for a few hours, we arrived to the room which was of course, characteristically small (which I have no problem with, I'm accustomed to the room sizes in Europe) and very old, but what struck us was that the head of the bed was on the same wall as the doorway, a mere 2 inches from the opening. Tired from our journey (an overnight train from Bavaria the night before) we attempted to nap but found the hallway noise unbearable. We went downstairs and kindly explained our situation and asked if there was a chance we could be moved. The staff said that they were completely booked and we would have to check back later that night. When we did, we were told the same story but from a different staff member-- we would have to check the next day with the staff who was working the morning shift.

After a sleepless night we pleaded once again, they said they only had a junior suite left and made it known that the nightly rate was well above the rate we paid. The new room was better, and I'm glad they could accommodate us but the entire process was handled unprofessionally with no customer service attitude whatsoever.

The icing on the cake to this unpleasant experience was that I left a blouse of mine on top of the bed as I was re-packing my suitcase before moving to the new room for our second night's stay. I noticed this a few hours later after walking around town, so we came back to the hotel and mentioned this to the front desk, who stated that their cleaning staff had left for the day and that we would have to check back in the morning (mind you, this whole attitude of us having to check back and instead of the hotel taking initiative to help its customers is something I've never encountered in a hotel of this price range and alleged quality). After checking back in the morning, we were told that the staff must have picked it up with the bed linens and that the laundry had already been sent out. We have followed up every day since we have checked out (3 days now) and they indicated that they do not have it anywhere. In fact one staff member suggested that I may have misplaced it... however, let it be known that like I said, this hotel was our last stop before our trip back to the states and was the last place that I saw my blouse.

Mind you, during the room-changing process my boyfriend and I walked down to the Notting Hill Hotel (also in the same price range with similar positive ranking) in hopes that we could stay our second night here instead. The difference in quality and service at this hotel was stark. The front desk was supremely helpful, giving us the orientation to the area, restaurant recommendations, tips on museum tickets, everything that we didn't get from the Dikker (and we hadn't even paid to stay there yet!). While it's not as centrally located, for the same price you get an updated, sleek boutique hotel atmosphere with a friendly staff and airport shuttle service too.

Dear Lcabal01,

We are very sorry to read about the experiences in our hotel during your recent stay. We do our best to please all our guests and are always willing to learn, but sometimes due to cirmunstances it is difficult to forecome certain situations. We have discussed the matters with our staff and we have double checked with our housekeeping department about the lost item, but this was not found. Only stayed 1 day so it was important that I stayed some place central. I was able to easily walk, rent a bike, shop all very close to the hotel. Accommodations were clean, people were nice, and I would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: From the pictures it looks like the higher rooms have better views. I was on the first floor but ha...

Perfect for being right in the heart of the shopping district and right on the canals! Lovely average sized rooms slightly older but clean and comfortable. We had a back room with no view as we were with a baby else the trams would be too noisy out the front. Small lift for all our luggage.
Good wifi in rooms.

This is my second time at this hotel and once again a great stay. Check in a breeze, staff very pleasant and helpful. I was fortunate enough to be upgraded again to a corner room which is very spacious and clean. It's also very quiet considering it's on quite a busy junction (well, busy for Amsterdam )
Would definitely recommend

Wonderful location, stayed before, large rooms, canal views. Fab deli/ shop on the corner - a little eclectic and a boutique feel. Very welcoming staff and room service very good, if menu slightly limited.

The positives: This hotel is right in the middle of it all, close to everything. It might be one of the best locations you could ask for in Amsterdam. Some of the rooms here are incredibly huge with canal views. Theres a metro stop right in front.

The negatives: The hotel is badly in need of a makeover or renovation. It's oldschool. Some of the rooms are not even accessable by elevator and you need to carry a bag up steps. In many of the rooms you can hear the metro bell pretty loud starting at 6am to 12am.

If you are looking for a good deal in a good location, this place is fine. But not if you want a 4 or 5 star that feels modern and polished.

Room Tip: The suites are huge, but get a high floor or you will hear the metro bell all day.

Dear Scorpio,

Thank you for your valuable review. It is good to hear that you mention our location as one of the best of Amsterdam.

We do our best to constantly upgrade our product. We have forwarded your message to the management regarding a hotel renovation. At this moment we are taking action to refurbish our rooms.

The stairs in our building De Prins, are unfortunately not avoidable. We are sorry to hear that help with your luggage was not offered upon your check in. We will instruct our personnel better to avoid any inconvenience in the future.

We hope you have enjoyed your stay with us and that we may welcome you again in the nearby future.
