“Great Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2011

Stayed at Dikker in September 2011. Absolutely the best location. Others complained about noise, etc. We had a room with balcony overlooking canal. It was so interesting watching the boaters. Not a problem at all. Room was a superior room with king bed, very large with wonderful amenities. If there was one fault was that the room had a tub with shower. It was very slippery when wet so be very careful getting in and out. Found staff very helpful answering questions. Again, great location for museums and general sightseeing in a good area. Does appear pricey but it's Amsterdam and a boutique hotel!

Room Tip: Ask for canal view, costs more but it is worth it!

Stayed with my wife 3 nights on 1st Oct. (her birthday present). We had a large double on the 2nd floor. The bedroom and bathroom were spotlessly clean. From other reviews we were well aware of the noise level from trams and late night revellers. We missed breakfast as we went to bed late and it would have been a struggle to get up early. There is tea and coffee making facilities in the room and a Starbucks just opp. the hotel. The staff are very nice and helpful. Then the location. Just a minute from Leidesplein with all its bars restaurants coffee shops night clubs and so near to the museums. So for all of these our next stay will surely be the Dikker again.

My son and I stayed here for 4 nights mid september. We had a very large room with twin beds and a seating area that had doors with Juliette balcony overlooking the canal. Had not booked a canal view room but were given one anyway. Our room was on the 2nd floor around the corner from all the noise of trams and late night drinkers so we weren't bothered by any noise.Had breakfast on 2 occasions had plenty of choice but somewhat extorionate price of 17 euros.Reception staff variable mostly pleasant but one staff member pretty disinterested answering questions.Internet in our room poor signal so mostly used the lounge area on 2nd floor for internet access.
Thought overall rather expensive but location very central to Museums, Anne Frank house and lovely Jordaan area.Would use hotel again

Room Tip: Go for a room overlooking the canal

The room was a disappointment : the bed was packed between 2 walls, which means the only possibility to go to bed was from the feet side. No space to put glasses or a watch. Furthermore, the room was overall noisy, as the phonic isolation seemed weak. I wrote an email to the staff to mention those points, but never received any answer...

Well located between the channels and with a beautiful view of Princengracht. Bathroom spacious and clean, as was the room. Kind and very helpfull staff. An ice machine could be provided, at least in the ground floor.

To get the feel of Amsterdam you must stay near the canals and this hotel on the Prinsengracht is a winner. A great location in a beautiful old building, close to shopping, food and drink. Buy an "I amsterdam City Card" and see the city. The trams are convenient and are a short walk from the hotel. Hotels in Amsterdam tend to be expensive so it was a pleasant surprise to find such delightful accommodation (in a character hotel) at a reasonable price. This is not a big chain hotel with a full service front desk but it is a quaint, clean and comfortable spot from which to explore the city and take refuge when tired. We were satisfied with the basic breakfast found in the basement cafe. We would come back.

Oh my... where do I start? As you will have gathered from the other reviews, the location of this hotel is perfect for getting to all the main attractions and galleries of Amsterdam on foot. The price you pay for this convenience is noise and not exactly the most picturesque position in this beautiful city. Yes, the hotel is on the wonderful Prinsengracht canal, but it's also on a terribly busy corner and opposite a chip shop and a kebab shop on the main drag down to Leidesplein.

If you want a romantic, quiet retreat on a canal, this definitely isn't it. If you want to be in the heart of the action though, give it a whirl. Our room overlooked the main street and it was very noisy, (probably stoned) mayhem well into the early hours. The room also had no air-con, so we had the fan provided right next to the bed just to stay semi-cool (it was way too noisy to have the window open...).

The rooms aren't comparable with other 4 star hotels I've stayed in: they are more akin to 3 star, but perfectly comfortable (except for the air con). But the corridors etc are a real let down here - very poor stairwells that have a dark, depressing institutionalised feel about them. We did find the reception staff very friendly and efficient, so plus points there. However, the maid service was just bizarre: we literally had someone hanging around outside our door waiting for us to leave for breakfast each day! This wasn't late, by the way - it was around 8:00-8:30am. It happened for 3 days on the trot: there they were waiting for us to leave, and then they would be inside the room before we'd even reached the stairs! It was kind of comical, kind of creepy.

If I were in Amsterdam again for 1 night, I'd consider this place for its convenience. But for a longer stay, I'd be seeking somewhere a bit quieter.

Note: I had to give this hotel a 'very good' review, as 'average' would have been too mean. In reality, it's somewhere between the two - i.e. just a plain old 'good'. Alas, there's no option for that.

Room Tip: Don't get one overlooking the main street if you can avoid it!
