“A Nice Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2014

We have stayed in other NH Hotels in Amsterdam, this was our visit to the Schiller. We booked this hotel at the time of Amsterdam Pride - which meant wall to wall people in the square out front and side streets all day and night for 3 days and nights. On arrival they noted we asked for a quiet room at the rear of the hotel but the receptionist said as we were NH members they wanted to put us up in front with a balcony. I was reluctant to accept due to noise out front on any day let alone Pride - but as it happened we heard only muffled noise from this room - notwithstanding full concerts out front with massive speakers. Our room was well appointed, albeit it small, but a sweet room for sure. We had a great little balcony that looked like it weighed several tons and I was reluctant to use it for fear it might fall off the building lol. We did enjoy our room very much, cleaning was great, everything worked just fine. Bed was comfy and we slept well. Front desk staff were great and we were appreciative they encouraged us to take this room - which had the best views the hotel offers. We will stay again.

we stayed a this hotel for 2 nights at the end of june and absolutely loved it! it's nice and clean and very central. All i will say is if you don't like noise don't stay here! it's surrounded by bars and loud music.. or at least ask for a room facing the back! they do supply earplugs but to be honest we slept through it all. we had a view of rembrandt square which was lovely. shopping was only about 5-10 min walk away as was everything else. rooms were spacious enough with very clean en-suite. reception staff were lovely and very helpful.
would recommend and would come back to this hotel :)

We have just returned from 2 nights staying at the NH Schiller. The hotel is in a perfect location with plenty of cafes and restaurants in the area.

The hotel is an old building which adds to the character of the place. In my opinion it does not need to be renovated like previous reviewers have said, by doing this it would lose all of its charm and character. The reception is quite a large area with a restaurant to the side.

The receptionists were extremley friendly, speaking excellent English. They appeared very helpful.

The rooms were a decent size. We did stay on the second floor to the back of the hotel, and we heard no noise whats so ever. In fact this was one of the quietest rooms in which i have ever stayed. There is a plasma TV and complimentary tea and coffee making facilities in the room. The bathroom was spacious with a lovely powerful shower. The room was extremly clean and tidy. There was a hair dryer in the bathroom.

As previous reviewers have said, there is no air conditioning in the room, however the fan they provided was adequate.

Outside of the hotel there are several 'coffee houses' within close distance, but remember this is Amsterdam and you never go a far before you come across one of these wherever you stay.

Remember to add a 5% city charge on top of your hotel cost. We never had breakfast in the hotel as there are plenty of cheaper options nearby.

We decided to walk to the hotel from the train station instead of taking a taxi or metro. It only took about 20 mins to do so.

If i ever came back to Amsterdam i would definately stay here.Go with an open mind and embrace their culture and environment.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel

Nice, clean hotel in the heart of Amsterdam. Polite staff. Cant say nothing about breakfast there, didn't buy it for extra price. Just close was nice cafe to have breakfast there, for half price. We booked this hotel just night before and it was almost 50% promotion, thats why price was really good, especially comparing to other hotels in Amsterdam. Is very expensive city for accommodation. Again want to say, location is really the best. Recommend.

The hotel location is in the heart of old centre of Amsterdam, everything around you, it is an old hotel, with average quality, fair in case of reasonable price, rooms sizes are good, but need some renovation, globally it is decent for couple of days

Room Tip: Rooms on the Ramblandt square

I booked this hotel and wasn't sure what to expect in light of the mixed reviews.

For starters, YES there is no air conditioning. But honestly it's not a very hot country. Some people feel the need for their environment to be arctic, and that's not the hotel's fault. My stay was in August and I never had a problem with the room being hot. In fact, they were kind enough to have left a fan for us in the room (which we hardly needed).

The toiletries smell awesome- like green tea. There is complimentary wifi, even in the rooms.

The staff are very kind and helpful and multi lingual. I really appreciate that upon check in, we were asked whether or not we preferred a front facing room. Obviously, we opted for a back room. Even in light of the noise coming from the nightlife spots nearby, we couldn't hear much from our room.

The location of this hotel is OPTIMAL. Close to the tram and the underground train, and RIGHT by all the action- MANY restaurants, bars and coffee shops nearby.

We had three days in Amsterdam and stayed at NH Schiller the whole time. I would not hesitate to stay here again in the future, but I would never stay in a front-facing room, as the noise would undoubtedly be unbearable.

Room Tip: Do not stay in a room facing the front of the hotel.

Great location. Lack of air conditioning is the fatal flaw. Building is musty, dank and dirty and in desperate need of refreshment. Certainly past it's prime. The value is good, but is definitely below four star level. Most rooms are small with lots of rough edges. Front rooms on the Rembrandtplein are noisy, while rooms on the back of the building are relatively quiet. Somewhat depressing to return to after appreciating the true beauty of Amsterdam
