“Great location but not clean and room smelled.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2014

This room was in an excellent location close to Dam Square, Leidseplein, Anne Frank House, really you could walk everywhere and it was close to trams also. Unfortunately the hotel smelled and was not as clean as it could be. The staff were friendly when we checked in and when we went to the room the pillows were massive cubes that were beyond uncomfortable and they were yellow on the inside which was gross. The wall beside the bed and curtains were dirty and the net curtains were all torn. The room smelled also so had to sleep with window open. Breakfast, we did not have as it was 12.50 pp which seemed extortionate when is much cheaper places nearby.

I'll start with the positives. Overall the hotel was comfortable, the beds and the bathrooms were clean and the location was ideal. We went as a couple with another couple for 3 nights. I booked 2 rooms and specifically asked that they did not charge to my card as we would pay on arrival. They charged to my card without sending me a courtesy email to let me know they had done so. The man on reception, Bruno, made no apologies for this and actually looked quite happy with himself. We were then told we could have a canal room with twin beds or no canal view with a double (because a couple would want to sleep in separate beds!) Our friends room reeked of sewage so they asked to be moved, after a lecture from one of the staff about putting their suitcase on the bed they were moved to, wait for it, a double room with a canal view!! That night we went for a few drinks at the bar, after 2 glasses of wine and a couple of beers the bar ran out of drink. Cans were €3.50 at the bar but you could buy them for €1.50 in the vending machine and drink them at the bar but the vending machine swallowed our money. He next day we enquired about train times to Eindhoven to which Bruno told us he would not help us, we asked could he check online for us to which he replied 'If you want to find out train times go to the train station!' The way the staff in the Rembrandt Classic treat people is absolutely shocking, most hotels would go out of their way to help you out but not here. They also asked for a €50 per room deposit when checking in and when we were checking out they told us we had to pay a city tax and this was taken out of our deposit. The man checking us out proceeded to throw the money on the counter at me. Why this was not charged when we were checking in I do not know. The taxi driver bringing us to the airport then told us the hotel is closing in May and been taken over by an English crowd and all the staff had been sacked. It explained a lot but as paying customers we did not deserve to be treated so badly. It was a disgrace.

When we arrived at the hotel the staff were not very welcoming. We were then told we had to pay 50 euro deposit which wasn't stated when booking, meaning we had less money for our trip. We then went to our room to find we had been given twin beds instead of double which we had booked. The room was exceptionally hot and poorly ventilated which made it very uncomfortable. Our key card for our room didn't work so we had to go to reception every single time we needed letting into the room. Very disappointing stay, loved Amsterdam and will be returning in the summer but wont be staying here.

Staff is friendly, location is great and price attractive but this hotel is really old and dirty: bigs spots on the carpet and on the walls, Cigarette burns on furniture and grey curtains due to dust....
I am even not sure you get for your money (room 318).

Pro's:
- good location ( less then 10 minutes of walking from Dam Square)
- clean
- nice hotel staff

Con's:
- breakfast ( bottled water was actually tap water, the omelette was not well cooked, vegetables were withered, coffee was ok)
- very old furniture
- rooms need refurbishment
- the ventilation can not be stopped therefore it was very noisy
- windows need to be changed because do not close well
- very poor internet connection

At arrival you will have to pay a 50 euro deposit that will be returned to you and also you will have to pay the city tax of aprox. 5 euro a day.

Recommended only as a last option. I will not repeat the experience.
