The Esselaar family who own and run the Estherea believe in creating a ‘home from home’ with attention to detail and many charming touches. With sofas to grow old in and treats round every corner, the hotel’s popularity is deserved. Simply, the Estherea is a gem.
I found all the staff friendly, polite and efficient. On arrival Igor welcomed us with useful information and Ricardo whisked us up to our room in the comfortable lift.
The exuberant décor features chandeliers and large floral displays - the red velvet double seat is worth the Most Romantic Trip Advisor rating alone. Children of all ages will enjoy finding Nemo in the vast and colourful aquarium. I believe children are given a small gift.
I used the payphone cubicle to make good value calls home. People seemed to enjoy the internet with printer (€5 for half an hour, I think) but we used the Easy Internet Café on the Damrak (€2 an hour). We didn’t get time to enjoy the well-stocked library with its guide books, magazines and novels but after a long day walking the Estherea felt like an oasis from Amsterdam’s excesses.
Situated on the peaceful Singel canal between the flower market, the up and coming Jordaan area and the Dam Square the Estherea is ideally situated.
Note: if you get off at Spui from the 5 or 12 tram as recommended in an earlier review you’ll have to drag your cases back a full block across cobbles. The previous stop is a little closer, though in retrospect I think the trip from the station with heavy luggage could be worth a cab.
During our stay the treats included strawberries and thick fresh cream, stroopwaffles, pastries and iced mint tea. The breakfast had plenty of choice, including the Dutch favourite of chocolate strands, flakes and vermicelli (hundreds-and-thousands in UK) to sprinkle on bread. There were plenty of choices for eating and drinking nearby, including fresh crispy spanakopitas in the Greek deli next door.
Room 312 was a good size for Amsterdam - airy, with a lovely view over the canal and not much noise. We found the safe and air conditioning simple once we’d worked them out – perhaps they could have more explanation. It was good to find complimentary mineral waters every day in the minibar, also a steam iron and board in the wardrobe. The TV had BBC 1, 2, World, CNN, Discovery and pay channels in English.
The bathroom was pretty and clean with elegant but practical facilities including a magnifying mirror, a washing line and a good long shelf to keep everything dry. Along with wall dispensers their Hydro basics toiletries had a botanic aroma suitable for men and women.
I am sorry the last reviewer had a bad experience but when I think how much I have paid for bleak Amsterdam hotels with cramped rooms and no lift, I thought the Estherea was excellent value.
Just one warning – I am now addicted to the Rademaker’s Hopjes coffee sweets they had on the counter but I can’t find them in the UK.
I suppose we’ll just have to go back …
