“tries hard to be 4 star”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2010

Estherea does not have a "a la carte" restaurant. Only breakfast is served at the cafe. Strictly, that alone disqualifies it to be a 4 star. However it tries to make it up by offering free coffee and cookies. The bar is operated by a bartender who doubles up as the bell boy and the coffee machine technician. The gym is small with basic equipment. The library is however a pleasant feature. Location wise it is centrally located close to many attractions and transport.

We specifically asked for a room with a canal view. The first night we were put up in the attic, a room that was NOT worth the additional charges. We complained and was transferred to a better room on the first floor. We should not be charged extra.

Cleanliness was superb. The front office was very professionally run.

Amsterdam has to be explored on bike. Bike rental was just around the corner. We were glad we did that.

Overall the Estherea was an excellent hotel in the 3 star category. We would recommend this hotel if the price is right. It is worthwhile to compare the rates with the 2 star outlet next door if location is the primary criteria.

used this hotel for our one night stay over on the amsterdam mini cruise.second stay at this hotel and seemed better than last time. Delightful rooms and staff. bonus hot drinks and cakes served all day in the lobby. perfect location ,quiet yet not too far from the action. breakfast was lovely but rather expensive -not for us though as we got a good bed and breakfast deal through easy to book .com. Highly recommended.

I chose this hotel based on other reviews on tripadvisor. I had expected the rooms to be quite small from other info I'd read and it was but still fine. The decor in the hotel is very nice, the location is really handy. I had to contact the hotel before I visited and they were very quick to reply and friendly. Free tea and coffee in the lobby and internet! Handy for checking in on flights etc.

Only grumble is that the room was a 'double' but it was actually 2 single beds pushed together.

Our reservation had mistakenly been canceled by 800-Hotels. Thankfully the hotel had a room available and the front desk staff was very accommodating in helping us (it was actually less expensive to book directly with the hotel than what we had been initially charged by 800-Hotels). We stayed for two nights and really enjoyed our stay. The location is great and our room was spacious and nicely decorated.

From the moment we checked in, we knew we made the right choice. The Hotel Estherea is lovely and the staff is wonderful. Our room faced the canal - very romantic. The room was beautifully decorated and much larger than we expected. The bathroom was huge and modern. The complimentary coffee/tea/sweets were a welcome indulgence at the end of the day.

There are quite a few good restaurants and bars just around the corner, and yet, our room was quiet and calm. Most attractions are just a short walk away and the tram is nearby for the attractions outside of walking distance. One of the canal boats stops just about a block away. It is a perfect location.

We first stayed at the Estherea for three nights in July, after a decade-long hiatus. It was the first Amsterdam hotel we ever stayed in. We have stayed elsewhere on the half dozen trips we have made since that inaugural visit a decade ago, not because we were disappointed by the first visit, but because it always seems to be booked. And no wonder, it has undergone some serious renovation since our fist visit and entered the world of luxury boutique hotels. That said, the staff are courteous, welcoming, and not at all pretentious--which distinguishes the Estherea from other hotels. The rooms are absolutely beautiful, quiet, and air-conditioned (which given the heat wave, was a god send). The hotel is ideally located, the surrounding neighborhood offers all kinds of dining options, and it is a 15 minute walk from central station. We will never stay elsewhere.
