My husband and I are well-travelled people who have stayed in many different countries and many different hotels, but I have to say - HANDS DOWN - this is the best hotel we have ever stayed at. We were looking for a reasonably-priced hotel and couldn't believe our luck when we stumbled upon this gem- which was voted as one of the most romantic in all of Europe by trip advisor travellers and also as one of the very best by Frommer's. We booked it immediately. My husband and I arrived in NL at 9 AM and immediately went to the hotel. They were very warm and accomodated us, even though we weren't due to check in for several hours. We we given room 414 (I recommend that you request this room!!!), which was both large, elegantly designed, and overlooking the canal. One side of the room was entirely windows,
with a window sill that we would often sit at just to watch the canal and the people who went by. The bathroom was huge, beautiful and immaculately clean. The bedroom itself was well-lit, decorated in a romantic and rich sort of way, and was unbelievably clean (not a single speck of dust in even the corners - trust me, I looked!). The bed was large, the kind of soft comfort that you sink into and fall asleep in immediately. There was an antique-looking chandelier on the ceiling. Being a corner room, we had a lot of privacy and did not have to deal with hearing any of our neighbors. The reception area is clean and looks more like an entry way to a small palace - with its gigantic chandelier and warm reception. There is free tea/coffee/water, and a beautiful sitting area, which we used sometimes for relaxation after wandering around the city all day. We did not try the hotel's food just because we wanted to wander about and try out other sorts of things. Nearby things that I found great: 1. Just 2 minutes away on the same canal is the floating flower market - which is a must see (even if just to say that you have seen it!). 2. Next to the flower market are a row of restaurants, and I recommend having breakfast at any of them - they're really great. 3. A little less than a block down, on the same side as the hotel (towards the flower market), there is a little shop named "Blond Amsterdam" - which makes cute little personalized gifts. I bought a bunch of things for my sister's bridal shower from there. 4. There is a fantastic Indonesian restaurant nearby. Its name is "Sampurna" or something like that. If you ask the receptionists, they'll be able to direct you (and make sure to try the "Bami" something - the fried noodles with chicken and vegetables - it's phenomenal).
The only major problem I had with the hotel was finding it - it has a beautiful exterior, but it's kind of hard to find with similar looking buildings adjacent to it. If you are walking (do yourselves a favor and please take this lovely walk if it's a great day!) to the hotel, make sure to ask for direction to the Singel Canal. As you are walking down the Singel Canal, the hotel is on the left side at number 303 (I believe). It is very near Dam square, all the shopping, half a billion restaurants, and enough stuff to keep you entertained during your stay in Amsterdam. Hope this helps!
