“A Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2010

We stayed for one night post-cruise and I spent a lot of time agonizing over where to stay when planning for Amsterdam. In the end, I chose the Hotel Estherea and am very happy that I did. We splurged and got a canal view room, which was beautiful (the view and the room). The service was fantastic and the feel of the hotel was great, a mix of old world boutique hotel with all the modern conveniences. We got there very early, but it was no problem to store our luggage and the coffee and sweets in the lobby were a nice treat. The location is great, quiet and off the beaten path but still very close to everything.

The hotel is four adjoining houses overlooking a canal. Charming, elegant, great service and centrally located for visiting Amsterdam. We reserved a room overlooking the canal which costs extra but is essential for the full experience. We arrived at 8.15AM and were in our room within an hour, a rare experience for transatlantic travellers. A unique featurevis a coffee machine in the lbby that dispenses, gratis, espressos, capucinos, lattes etc after freshly grinding the beans. Staff were very helpful, breakfast was expensive (16 Euros) but very good. Room safe was an impenetrable 10 step process to program and we gave up. Loved the place and would return.

Our room was at the street side and was really small. There was no space to put our suitcases due to the 2 big chairs and table as well as some kind of wall unit taking up most of the space. The double? bed was tiny and uncomfortable. We kept on saying how our room at a cruise ship had more usable space.

The Hotel Estheréa has as its Lobby's centrepiece, a magnificent crystal chandelier. In all its glory, it draws the eye of everyone who enters, commanding attention as it accentuates its prominence as the "pièce de résistance".
It consists of a myriad of crystals, each small fragment beautiful and pristine on its own. However, taken altogether each of those crystals combine to become, as a whole, more brilliant and dazzling than they possibly could individually.
This is my view of the Hotel Estheréa , with its various attributes and facets, each exceptional and noteworthy in their own right, but nonetheless when put together, rises above and surpasses the average hotel experience into another dimension.
The notable facets of the Estheréa include, in no specific order:
*old world charm combined with luxurious accommodations
*immaculate, historic and stunning architectural canal house on the outside, fused with modern amenities, yet reflecting the lifestyles of centuries past on the inside.
*pristine, central location along the first of four concentric, semicircle canals surrounding the city centre, almost everything within walking distance.
*the enigmatic Dutch "gezelligheid" quality, the ambience which makes the hotel warm, cozy and welcoming. That indefinable element that makes a stay memorable.
*romantic rooms with heavenly beds, which exceed European expectations and standards, especially the modern and chic, immaculately clean washrooms.
*large, landscaped central atrium, perfect for allowing maximum natural light to filter into enormous floor to ceiling windows.
*fabulous breakfast buffet to indulge in with relaxation, fortifying you each morning for an enjoyable, unforgettable experience in Amsterdam.
*decadent treats and nibbles set out fresh all day, tempting you to pour yourself a complimentary tea or coffee (cappuccino, expresso, americano, etc), forcing you into lingering awhile in the plush surroundings of the lobby or the luxurious library.
*refreshing mint & lemon infused water, available from the dispenser on the bar, to enjoy while waiting for one of the two computers provided, courtesy of the hotel.
*stunning floral displays throughout, attention to details, including individual cloth hand towels in the lower common/public restrooms.
*a gracious owner (along with her adorable daughters), who mingles and chats with the guests, ensuring the intimate, family-oriented, yet boutique atmosphere of the hotel.
*exceptional service and hospitality from each and every staff member. From the bellboys, the housekeepers, the bartender, to all at the Front Desk, including those who replied to all my prior email requests promptly. But we especially want to mention Singh. No request, and there were many, was too great or too small for him. He is a top-notch professional, who bent over backwards to make our family's visit special.

The only fault that could be found are the sounds that can carry between rooms, depending upon how courteous your neighbouring guests conduct themselves in the wee hours. In our travels we have experienced this occurrence in many establishments, so much so, that we don't travel without being adequately prepared with quality earplugs. Therefore this didn't affect us, but the unwary may not anticipate this, and it would be negligent not to mention.

Taking all these factors into account, the well-travelled adventurer would not be disappointed in choosing the Hotel Estheréa . It truly is a destination within a destination. A genuine gem for those who look for and expect elegance and excellence.

We stayed 2 nights at the Estherea while awaiting a cruise. Very nicely located overlooking the Singel Canal, within walking distance of just about everything. Loved the hotel - a quiet charm; well-appointed. Staff very helpful and professional. Free internet in lounge, which is nice to see in Europe - not usually the case. Wonderful coffee machine available 24 hours in lounge at no charge. Didn't eat there; prefer to eat in local restaurants. Room a decent size (for Europe); smallish by North American standards, but quite manageable. Facilities (washroom, TV, etc.) first rate. Windows open for fresh air! Nice view. Would not hesitate to stay here again.

Canal view room was spacious, quiet with a beautiful bath. Hotel staff was helpful and accomodating. Lobby and guest seating areas were elegantly decorated. Ease of internet access with 2 PCs available in the lobby made checking EMail very easy.

Would go back without hesitation.
