My husband and I stayed here from October 8th-14th, in a canal room, which I requested ahead of time when I booked through their website. Our room was fairly large and the view of the canal out of the front windows was fantastic. The lobby was beautiful, breakfast was pretty good, and there were lots of nice spots to hang out and have tea or coffee in. The location was terrific, pretty central to things that we wanted to do and only a few blocks away from a train. The staff was perfectly fine, they helped us when we needed help and were always polite.

The room did have a few bad points however, and I was fairly disappointed after reading all of the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor.

While the room did look fairly nice, the bed was horrible and had both me and my husband tossing and turning. He actually lost a fair amount of sleep one night because he was just so uncomfortable. We got a bit used to it after a couple of nights and to be fair we are a bit pampered by our mattress at home, but this was just awful. I've slept on fold out sofa beds that were more comfortable.

Then there was the bathroom. I have stayed in many hotels with teeny bathrooms, that wasn't the problem. The problem was the mildew, stained towels, and bad ventilation. I can honestly say this was the worst hotel bathroom I have ever been in. Just very unpleasant overall.

One thing that we did not have a problem with was the squeaky floorboards. The noise from other rooms and floors seemed fairly minimal to me, but we live in a flat that is on the second floor of a three floor hundred year old building with wood flooring on each level, so both floor noise and hearing other people is probably less likely to get to me then other people.

Overall a very pretty hotel, and we had a decent stay there, but the bed and bathroom will keep us from returning.

  • Liked — The views of the canal from the room.
  • Disliked — The bathroom! Ick.

I recently spent the weekend with my boyfriend at the Hotel Estherea and it really was lovely. The location on the Singel canal is perfect; every attraction is within walking distance and there are a number of excellent restaurants very near-by. Although we were in one of the smaller rooms (we got an excellent out of season deal), it was perfectly formed and exceptionally clean. As mentioned in some of the other reviews, one of the nicest touches is the free tea, coffee, hot chocolate and cakes; it feels like such a treat to come in from a day's walking/sight-seeing and to relax in the beautiful reception area. I would without hesitation recommend this hotel and will stay here on any further trips to Amsterdam.

If you are tired of corporate hotels this is the place for you. Small individual hotel near centre easy to find, friendly staff. As a business traveler it was a breath of fresh air. Small standard double room with great view of canal suited us just fine.

Try it ;-)

  • Liked — clean, hot water, great servoce
  • Disliked — compact - but not too small

We have stayed at the hotel three times, always for at least two nights. The first time we stayed in a room on the top floor. That was ok and we were quite impressed so rebooked to stay before and after flights from Amsterdam. However, these last times were very disappointing. The rooms we stayed in were ok in size, but have the noisiest floorboards ever. It was so bad we hardly slept because of guests moving around above us. We stayed in rooms overlooking the internal courtyard on the first and fourth floors. The reception area is quite cosy, but the coffee machine is often breaking. The staff is a mixed bag. From a very pleasant and helpful young lady, to the most terribly grumpy man on reception. Make sure you check your bill before you leave. The people next to us at check out were charged for breakfast they didn't have and other quests having meetings there were also complaining to the grumpy man about being overcharged. This hotel has totally lost it for us. We will not be returning.

  • Disliked — Terribly noisey floorboards
