“Lovely,elegant hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2011

I stayed here on a brief side-trip from a business trip to London. It is a lovely, old-world hotel with charming, elegant common areas and luxurious rooms. At first I was taken to a room overlooking a tiny, interior ventilation well. The canal-view rooms were all booked up for a convention. I asked to be moved to a city view room and they promptly complied. It was a lovely room by any standards and the style seemed to be classic Dutch elegance. The staff were nice to me, a Canadian. I noticed that they were rude to some American people who checked in and for no good reason. All of Europe seems on edge these days. The hotel is easy walking distance to the main sights of Amsterdam and the train station. It's located on the Singel Canal so evening strolls were pretty and fun.For all intents and purposes, the Netherlands is an english-speaking country. There is a grocery store near the hotel that has great food but the North African cashier staff seemed to be systematically taking advantage of the American tourists who were confused by the metric denominations of the euro currency. Amsterdam is a clean, well-run city with little drama or sirens. People are blunt but honest and helpful. I was surprised by the lack of flower gardens/planter pots and pets seem to be second-class citizens.

Really enjoyed our stay here - decor was gorgeous and room comfortable, if a little on the small side. However not in the room much so not a problem.
Location is great.
Ate at:
Red- gorgeous lobster, lovely evening, great service
New King - not much atmosphere, ok food, large portions.

Would consider returning if back in Amsterdam.....

The hotel is very conveniently located close to Dam, Liesplain and Rembrantsplain - tram stop is nearby, and you can even walk to all three locations if you're not in a rush. We found the hotel itself to be very cosy and elegantly furnished in a classic style. It has an "at home" atmosphere rarely found in other hotels.

What can I say? It was our first visit to Amsterdam and Netherlands at all. And it was unforgettable. We stayed in Estherea Hotel and the hotel has had met all of our expectations. Excellent location on Singel bank just 4-5 minutes from Dam place, cosy and calm, gorgeous breakfast with champagne and combination of buffet and a la carte, free internet access (to be true at Lobby only), all day complimentary coffee service (espresso, cappuccino, macchiato etc., hot chocolate, about of 10 sorts of tea, snacks in finally. And all of that for a good enough price. The only weakness of the hotel is in room audibility. It really feels like you share the room not only with your family but with another two families. However, if we'll go back to Amsterdam again I hope we'll stay in Estherea.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The beds were divine. Decor lovely. This place has character. Situated on a quiet canal but close to the centre. Only downside was the bathroom with saloon door which was not ideal in a triple room.
Our daughter was very taken by the 'free' hot chocolate and sweets provided in the foyer, and by the tropical fish tank. The hotel was very homely with comfortable areas to relax, surf the net or read in the library.
We did not eat in. There are plenty of restaurants locally for breakfast and dinner.
However, the exchange rate is not good and we found it very expensive. Got ripped off by the taxi driver summoned by the hotel who took a very roundabout route and charged the earth. Not the hotel's fault, I suppose, but I would arrange my own taxi next time.

I booked a +400 euro/night deluxe canal view room for our romantic escapade, the room was just OK, nice, clean but too small, the minibar had just 2 bottles of water. The bathroom had not proper door (more like a folding closet door), tube was very small too - we couldn't be at the same time, neither had a shower together. The curtain was too long, quickly soaked and leaking outside so I had almost a pond outside after the shower. The room's key is not a card key but the old-style key with a bulky keyring, which we must to leave it at the reception when going out. The hotel doors closed at night so coming back at 2 a.m. was a little hectic. The 16 euro breakfast is not worth it, tables are small as well as the breakfast room. You can hear everything happening outside your room, people walking, talking so my guess was that the other way around was true too. Room's pictures look fine for a romantic weekend but for sure, I will neither recommend this hotel nor come back with that purpose.

Room Tip: ask for a room far from the elevator to be sure to sleep.

This is the best hotel we've ever stayed in. It's in one of the many very old buildings in Amsterdam. It's nicely located on Singel, and an easy walk to everything.

The hotel is richly decorated with wood-paneled sitting rooms and chandeliers.

They offer an superb (but pricey) breakfast, free coffee/capuccino/espresso day and night, and even an elevator (rare for old European buildings, but quite a delight after walking up staircases during our stays in Edinburgh and Copenhagen, earlier on this trip).

The fine decor isn't limited to the lobby. The rooms are well-furnished in traditional style, and the large bathroom was outfitted with all modern fixtures, neat and clean.

We arrived on a Thursday, and the rate was a bit under $200 USD. The rate goes up on Friday and Saturday, at around $240. It's not cheap, but it's worth it, especially considering the service, decor, and location. I've paid similar amounts for MUCH lesser hotels.

I don't know if or when I'll visit Amsterdam again, but this hotel would be my first choice.
