“Wheelchair access”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2014

This was the only hotel that I found in central Amsterdam which said it had an acceptable level of access. There must be others but a lot that are listed on databases as accessible when questioned to not have a room with roll-in showers.

As the pictures show the bathroom is great for wheelchair access.

The ramped door beside the main entrance of the hotel though can be a problem. My wheelchair only just fit onto the ramp ... the wheel rolled right on the edge and slipped off a couple of times. I could not enter independently. Also, the door is kept locked and the staff at reception have to open it each time.

Other than this the room was very spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was good, and the corner table overlooks a very busy corner to watch the bicycle/tram/car/pedestrian ballet. Location is great close to Rembrandt Square.

The only thing going for this hotel is the central location and the breakfast. The reception staff were efficient enough, but certainly not welcoming, the room was not cleaned properly nor the tea/coffee replenished and only one of the lifts worked most of the time. The worst thing of all-the barman didn't seem to know the difference between a malt whisky and a blend, which for this Scots lady was the last straw! As a place to sleep it was OK, but overall, very disappointing.
It is a shame, because it is so central and the breakfast is really fantastic.

Out Of Order.

I know this hotel from passing as I'm no stranger to Holland and from the outside it has always appeared to be a large, modern and most importantly very centrally located hotel. However from the point of check-in it became obvious that the outside of the hotel was going to be the best impression that we were going to get. Check-in staff were super quick and didn't waste time with things like pleasantries or eye contact. We were quickly told to use the service elevator as all three guest elevators were out of order. They were out of order for the vast majority of our 4 day / 3 night stay. Using the service elevator did however offer many delights not least because of the very unkempt, cramped, crowded conditions that it offered but at high demand times (most of the time) we had to resort to using the adjacent stairs which offered such delights as filthy walls, dirty carpets (on the flights of stairs that offered carpets), graffiti scratched into paint work, and an ensemble that included scattered broken crockery, old odd boots and my personal favourite, a sleeping man. Please see my aptly titled pictures.

The room itself had seen much better days. A warm waft of built up chemical deodoriser greeted us every time we entered the shabbily furnished small tired room. This non smoking room had been deodorised for as many long years as it's aged furnishings could take. There was however a very nice large flat screen TV that offered fewer channels than the basic Dutch local household would receive, no music channel, no radio channels, no film channels. There was however a large bundle of cables on the desk under the TV which evidenced a rather botched installation. Bathroom toiletries were also severally rationed.

The integrated air conditioning system in the room was initially dead. When I enquired about this one evening I was informed that it would be turned on for me. What actually happened was that much, much later in the evening a rattling fan system started which evidently was not having any cooling effect no matter what setting I tried and it was instead just circulating the now nauseating room odour complete with rattling effect.

The room had a balcony area which I suspected was quite easily accessed from the balcony of the adjacent ironing room which was open to all residents. I therefore chose to keep the balcony doors closed, therefore containing the room odour. The ironing room deserved a picture too as a collection of litter remained in their throughout our stay - see aptly named picture.

The hotel bar offered the best amusement in the form of guessing if you were going to be served. Where staff way out number customers it was always amusing / frustrating to find out that on Friday night we could not get a drink at approximately 11.30pm as we were told the bar was closed (by the staff member locking the bar in front of us) soon to be surpassed by Saturday evenings' 7.30pm last orders call.

As well as the guest lifts being constantly out of order the guest printer in reception was also constantly advertised as being out of order (it probably ran out of ink printing all of the 'Out Of Order' signs) and the credit card machine in the cafe / bar was also advertised as being out of order although someone appears to have corrected the spelling with biro. See pictures.

I hope that we caught this dying hotel just before a major refit as it was sad to see and experience it in its current state, it was even more sad however to pay to see it in its current state and it was more than just its furnishings that were in need of a refresh. One of our party assured us that other NH hotels in Amsterdam are not of this calibre, to be honest this place would be very difficult to match. In summary there is currently no reason to stay here when there are so many neighbouring hotels offering the same location. This isn't a 4 star hotel in my opinion.

Debating whether to give this a 3 or 4 rating, as realistically, it is somewhere in between. One of the big plus points is the location. Most attractions are within walking distance and there is a tram stop close by. When we arrived, we were able to check in early and have the room straight away. The room itself was fairly typical of a lot of city centre hotels, quite small, but comfortable enough for a short break. The bed was comfortable, with duvets instead of blankets. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided, as well as shower gel/shampoo etc. Flat screen tv on the wall has a couple of English TV channels, including BBC1. A big downside is the fact there was no safe in the room, and although nothing went missing from our room we felt uncomfortable leaving our valuables. The carpet was also quite stained and threadbare. Our room was on the 5th floor facing away from the front of the hotel, so it was quite quiet, but there was nothing to look at except other hotel rooms. The lifts were very slow and one of them broke down while we were there. We did not eat at the hotel, so can't comment on the food, but the menus in the room looked expensive. There are lots of good and cheap places to eat in the area. We asked if we could check out late as our flight was not until the evening, but they wanted 12€ an hour for the room, so we left our luggage in their luggage room instead.

We stayed for two nights here. It was a mixed experience .......

The positives :

1) Generally highly responsive to e mails before our arrival. Three out of four e mails we sent were responded to on same date, for the fourth I had to send a reminder , which was a bit of a let down

2) We had requested a quiet room on the upper floor, and the lady at the check in was very very accommodating and helped us to get a fantastically quiet room, particularly as we had landed on King's DAY when there were hordes of partying people on the roads late into the night

3) Clean hotel with good towels, hair dryer, mini bar, tea coffee making facilities

4) Excellent and most convenient location for trams, distance from Centraal station ( 20 minutes walk ), can walk to Rijksmuseum, close enough to canal bus stop too

5) Free wifi ..... though could have been faster

6) Very comfortable beds

Negatives

1) Room is small, bathroom is small

2) No hangars in the room, had to remind again after asking for some

3) Clothes you wish to hang in the wardrobe have to hang over the tea /coffee kettle as there is no other space

4) No safe in the room

5) AC not really effective

6) Understaffed front office, so check in and help in reception slow

7) Main lifts did not work most of the time when we were there, there was one staff lift most people used which meant long waits and overcrowding

There is an Italian restaurant which does not appear to have much custom, we did not try. Nor did we try the breakfast as there are much cheaper options available just outside the hotel.

I would not rate it as four star, but yes a good three star option from overall convenience point of view ........... but then , it is overpriced for a three star

Room Tip: If you want quiet, ask for rooms in the central part of the hotel on an upper floor.

The Hotel is a perfect option for a great stay in Amsterdam ,Located in the best central location alowing 10-15 minute walk to almost every significant place in the city , The hotel it self very clean , The staff are very kind and helfull the rooms are clean staffed very well (towels , bath soaps etc.) and very comfortable , The breakfast buffet has many options and very tasty including Gluten Free Products , the dining room is beautifull , the only problem are the lifts a very long wait every time you need to use them as only 1/3 was working .

The excuse for our wardrobe falling apart, airconditioning not working properly and 2 of 3 lifts not working (during 4 days) was lack of attention due to a refurbishment programme. Young front desk staff demonstrated embarrasment and defiance in equal measure. Great location, but not 4*. Hotel seriously lacking effective management and attention to detail.
