“Not great ”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2013

We were originally booked into the 3 star NH Tropen hotel but due to being overbooked they upgraded us to the Carlton. Initially we were very happy with this but on arrival everything was just a bit too much of an effort for the staff on the desk. It took him ages to book us in and he served other people, answered the phone and chatted with colleagues during this process. After hours of travelling I just wanted to dump the bags and get something to eat!!
We eventually got to our room which wasn't exactly what I had in mind for a 4 star hotel. The room was clean and had all of the things you need - hair dryer, tv, tea/coffee, toiletries, safe - but the whole place looked tired and in need of some work eg rust spots on the radiator, tired looking decor, no pressure in the shower, staining on the bath. There was a weird stain on the carpet which we later discovered was every time the shower was on water would seep through to the bedroom causing a puddle.
I wouldn't say this hotel was 4 star but it will do if you are looking for a place to crash for a few days.
I probably wouldn't go back...the Tropen looks like it has better reviews!!

Great position.
Nice, well laid out room.
Clean and well planned bathroom facilities.
Great breakfast, lots of choice and nice dining room.
Some decor a little tired.
Some room noise at front but not a problem for us.

Stayed at the NH Carlton Amsterdam, Between the 10th and 13th of Oct 2013, The hotel is very centrally located , 5 mins walk from Rembrandtplein and 10 mins walk from Leidseplein. The 2 best places to go Bar hopping in the middle of the night. Shopping district and the flower market are right beside the hotel. Tram station is conveniently located opposite the hotel . Dam square and the red light district is 2 stops away by Tram. Museumplein is also 3 tram stops away.
The rooms were smaller than expected for the price paid, But on the 6th floor with a balcony makes you forget how small the rooms were. Bathroom is neat and clean. Overall it was a good experience.

Room Tip: Rooms with a balcony are the best

We returned to Amsterdam for our annual trip - which seems to be becoming more that annual, and again stayed at the NH Carlton. My better half booked this trip, and choose an upgraded room. Worth the price. On the top floor with a superb view of Amsterdam, a bed to get lost in, a nice sitting area and two patio doors (Room 723). As ever we looked around for alternative accommodation, but are satisfied that this is still the best from location and value for money. As previously reported in reviews, the major tram routes are easily accessible from this hotel, and a number of superb restaurants and squares (Rembrandts, Dam), are within easy walking distance, or one or two stops on the tram.

I wanted to add a little travel experience to this review, and I hope it will be found of use. We arrived on time at Schiphol, to find the trains to Central were off, due to pedestrians on the line!! We had already intended to buy our GVB travel tickets at the Airport. They can be obtained from the Tourist Information Centre, which is near the meeting point on the concourse (any of the retail outlets will direct you). The advantage is that the queues are much smaller than at Central, and whilst you still have to buy a ticket to get transport to Amsterdam, the ticket is not validated until your first journey in Amsterdam - so all you gain is time!! and you can get straight onto a tram etc. outside Central. As the trains were off, we enquired about alternatives. There is a bus from outside the Airport (197 I think, 4 euros per person) which drops you at Leidseplein. From there you can get the 1,2 or 5 to Central - worth knowing if there is a problem, it takes longer that the train, but if you are staying around the Museum quarter you will save time. You can buy bus tickets from the bus stand (number 11). The Tourist people are really helpful. Needing to recover from the journey, we headed straight to the nearest bar on the square. There is one problem at the moment - they are relaying the 1,2 and 5 tramlines, so there are no trams. However, this will be sorted soon so beware to get advance information.

As ever, we had no problems around Amsterdam. Our return journey was fun though. We came back on the tail end of the hurricane which swept Britain. All trains, trams, barges and buses were off due to trees in canals, trees on roads, overhead cables blown down etc. so we had to get a taxi. Price from the hotel 45 euros. Worth it to get there knowing that we were in time even if the flight wasn't - which it was.

Hope this helps some people. There are alternatives, and help is there is you know where to go to ask for it. Travel is fun and really is what you make of it. My glass is always half full, and usually full to the brim!!

Room Tip: The more expensive the room the higher up you are. The views on the top floors are excellent.

In the centre of the canal ring. Decent sized, clean room with comfy beds. Grand hotel reception. Didn't try the food, plenty enough to eat out in many nice places in the area. Smoking rooms available

The positives of this hotel are the great location for galleries/museums etc, friendly and helpful receptionists and a really good all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast with lots of choice - unless you are leaving before 7.30 am. If so, breakfast is on a tiny trolley in reception between 6.30 and 7.00am and apart from drinks, only had croissants, apples and oranges on offer. No plates or knives so you have to stand there trying to put jam on croissants in mid-air with a tiny wooden spatula. I expected better service than this, and it's very poor value given that we had paid for 3 nights B & B. I appreciate that an early hours cooked breakfast can't be provided, but more choice e.g. bread rolls, slices of cheese/cold meat would be good. Better still if they provided a table in the restaurant with the same selection of cold food, sliced fruit and cereals etc that is provided for the buffet t, so that guests could have a decent breakfast before they left. The room itself was clean and comfortable, but the bathroom was a bit whiffy (other reviewers have said this too), and the button to direct water to the shower head had seized up, so water came out of the bathtap too. Not a big problem in itself, but a sign that maintenance isn't that good. As chain hotels go it isn't great value for money, and it certainly doesn't rate as 4 star in my book.

The hotel is well-located on the Muntplein, within easy walking distance of most of the main sites in Amsterdam (particularly Bloemenmarket but also Dam Square and De Wallen). However, we were disappointed with a few key aspects of the hotel. First, the staff were generally rather unhelpful, and gave off the impression that they were too busy to deal with our requests. When we checked in, for instance, we were not even acknowledged for a long time despite the lobby being rather quiet. All of our subsequent encounters with reception continued this trend.

The room was very small and more pertinently the bathroom smelled strongly of stale urine. When we asked reception to check this out, they waited for over an hour and a half to send somebody up, during which time we had contacted them a further time. On the positive side, they did give us a better room with a great view of the Muntplein, although this room, too, had a mild urine smell. The bedroom was otherwise well-maintained and comfortable.

On checking out, the receptionist tried to hurry us off and was rather unfriendly and patronising, when we had reasonable requests to make about booking the airport transfer service and asking the hotel to look after our bags before our evening flight.

Overall I am surprised that this is a 4* hotel, having visited many superior 3* hotels in other cities. The 20 euros demanded for an ordinary-sounding continental breakfast is laughable (we passed on this offer), and I would not recommend the hotel based on the staff and the smelly bathrooms.

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing the Muntplein for a great view!
