Location:

A bit far off from most attractions and the city center. It is about 25-30 minute walk to the center. This should not be a problem if you are fit or like to walk. Under extreme situations, such as extreme weather conditions or expectant moms, it would be too far of a walk. I usually like to walk but I found it was a bit too far for me especially that I had only three days in Amsterdam and the weather was disagreeable. Alternatively, you can use public transportation to get to the center.

The Room:

It is a 5-star establishment. I think it should be more like 3+/4 star than 5. The carpet looked very dated. The sheets were white but off white look. Therefore, it looked old. Compared to the Hilton I stayed in NYC, the sheets look old. I would have preferred that the sheets be real white. Most of the furniture was in good condition. I did not like to “blond” color of the furniture, just a personal preference. The bed and pillows were comfortable and. Pillow “menu” also was also available; therefore, one will be able to find to one’s liking and needs. Crab Tree and Evelyn toiletries were very nice. There was one bathrobe and slippers. Did not use the mini bar or other facilities therefore cannot comment. There was no morning newspaper.

Bathroom was large and looked modern. No issues with the bathroom.

Service:

Inconsistent service. Checking in was a breeze. It took about 5 five minutes. The front desk person was very nice, friendly, and gracious. She asked if we would need a map or if we want her to escort us to our room. She also said if we need any other assistance, we should not hesitate to ask her. She really went out of her way.

Checking out was another story, the gentleman who did the checkout for us was very abrupt, spoke very fast (in English) and allowed to be interrupted various times by his co-workers. This should not be a big deal if it was elsewhere. For a five star hotel, there was no refinement there.

Downturn service offered upon request.

Recommendation:

Not recommended unless you are certain about the poor location and the inconsistent service. If you expect a true five star, then this place is not the one

I booked this stay using Hilton Diamond Special Services, which is always excellent and the property did not disappoint.

It is a bit South from the action but the neighborhood is wonderful and the Tram takes about 10 minutes to get to the city center. The service was excellent and everyone was very nice and helpful.

They even have bikes that you can rent (although it was free for me, as a Diamond Member) and were helpful with maps and tips while riding. I would highly recommend the hotel for either business or leisure.

stayed two nights for our first ever trip to Amsterdam
booked through expedia who told us it was the best hotel.
Arrived 25 euros from Schiphol airport to this quite modern clean hotel only to be told that we are another 25 euro taxi trip away from the main attractions in amsterdam itself!
the room was excellent make sure you order a canal facing room< I have since stayed at the Krasnapolsky on Dam Square which is supposed to be a 5 star which it is definatley NOT this hotel the Hilton is ten times better the only problem is the location as it is far away from what tourists want to see.
As an executive room we had breakfast on the rooftop restaurant which was excellent with great views well recommended. If only this hotel was near the centre then it would be no contest. The bed was very large and comfortable , staff great and efficient.
If you want a quiet leisurely stay in Amsterdam then this is the hotel to stay at or you are on business and want to avoid the cannabis/beer and sex tourists then again well worth a stay but if you want to be near the action then prepare for a expensive taxi ride.

  • Liked — great beds and rooftop breakfast
  • Disliked — too far away from Dam Square and the tourist area

On November 30th 2007, I called and booked the John and Yoko Suite (2000 USD p.night) for new year's eve. The suite appeared to be available, they took my reservation and my AMEX details.
The following day the front office supervisor sent me an e-mail stating that "he would send my confirmation soonest, early next week"
Almost one week later, on Thursday 6, the same supervisor sends me an e-mail saying that -in order for my reservation to go through- I needed to book 3 nights in a row.
I live almost next door to the Hilton hotel: this was supposed to be a nice surprise present for a friend from Las Vegas, it turned out to be a scam Hilton style.

I have been to Amsterdam a few times, and the Hilton was very nice - much larger rooms than any European hotel at the same price. BUT, the location did not make up for it.

Pros:
- Large rooms
- Great bathroom and tub!
- Cozy bar with fireplace
- maid service was great

Cons:
- Location, location, location!
- To use a phone card would coast you 1,60 euro/minute still!
- 24 hours of internet is euro 27.

The area around the hotel really didn't have much going for it. We did find an amazing italian place only a 5 minute walk away, but that's it. Usually I am not one to complain at all, but compared to staying within the city center (which we did last year), this is just TOO far away! We always like to go to the room in the afternoon, just to drop off any packages and recoup for 20 mins. With the Hilton, it was impossible and didn't happen. Once you leave in the morning, it's too much of a pain to return before nighttime when you are ready for bed. It's a 20-25 minute tram ride just to Dam Square! So if you plan on staying out after midnight, you will need to pay about 25 euro for a cab at least - as opposed to walking to most central hotels.

If room size is more important than location, this is a great place. The staff was very nice, and the rooms were wonderful. If only the location was better, it would be perfect. To me, it's just too far away. I think most people would be better off staying at one of the MANY affordable and nice hotels more central. Last year we stayed at Hotel New Amsterdam, we only used the tram 1 time, and it was in the perfect location. Quiet street and everything. I think you can do a bit better location for the price! Have a great time in Amsterdam, and consider a day trip to Haarlem - it was gorgeous!
